Hi guys i recently purchased a 40-gal tank, and i really want to put another reptile in it but i really cant decide whether to get an adult corn snake, a ball python or a colombian redtail boa!. i really like all of these snakes. i own a corn snake but i have never owned a python nor a boa. also considering a lizard, but more into snake haha. Thanks

The red tail will, WILL, get past 6 feet and need a much bigger enclosure. Just get a nice, big corn or a BP. I recommend a corn or a bearded dragon most of all. Good luck setting it up. ;)

If you go BCC, it will outgrow your tank. If you go BCI, you'll be snug but the tank will suit a MALE BCI well. Females tend to have more girth.

You should get a ball python because I was going to get one this year, but I decided to wait until next year. Also, buy a 2 year old normal female...because that's the one I was about to buy :)

Adult corn snake or a BP. BCC will get too big. A dwarf BCI might suit you, a male wouldn't outgrow that enclosure for a while. And although there are differences between BCC & BCI in appearance, BCI come in many beautiful morphs, so you could find one that was gorgeous.

Being an owner of all three types, here is my two cents.

Corns.
Fantastic snakes, especially for beginners. A 40 gallon would be like a palace to an adult and I'm sure they'd love it. Hundreds of morphs and styles to choose from. You can't go wrong with a Corn, IMHO.

Ball Pythons.
Another awesome choice. Easy to take care of and they usually like to hang out. Tons of morphs are available, but can be pricey. Normals are just as fantastic, though, IMHO.

BCI Boas.
If it weren't for these guys' sizes, I think they would make great starter snakes. They are slow moving and patient (at least mine are!), but grow rather fast and rather HUGE in time. As mentioned above, this one will eventually outgrow your 40 gallon and you'll need to get a bigger enclosure.

So...my suggestion would actually be to get the Ball python or the Corn. Where you've owned the Corn before, you've got the experience and where you haven't owned the BP before, you'll get to have new exposure to a different animal. ;)

Go ball python! They are simply amazing. I cannot stress enough how much I love mine (I own 3). No feeding issues as of yet, and most of those can be fixed relatively easily. They're calm, don't bit often, and are sooooo pretty! The morph possibilities are almost endless. :D

Tell that to a snake who refused live, frozen, smaller, larger, scented and even split rats AND mice. ;) :D Two months later, when I thought for sure my girl was going to have to be assist-fed, she finally decided she was hungry and ate. :headbang:

Lol! I guess I must be lucky then. Not one of my ball pythons has refused food--all 3 will take live, only one of those 3 will accept F/T. But I'm going to try to make them switch soon...Hmm.
Still love Bp's though XD

Hey, don't feel bad. I've been tube feeding a little non-feeder corn for quite some time, now. Good thing I like her so much :). I hope she'll decide to eat on her own someday soon, though!

Have patience. Yours will eventually go on hunger strike, too.... ;)

Royal or corn.
I wouldn't put a boa in a glass enclosure anyway. Does not seem suiting. And a boa would probably outgrow this anyway.

I have a dwarf, male BCI - the smallest of the small. I wouldn't put him in a 40, but he does seem happy in his 60.

If I had an extra 40 gal laying around, I'd put a white sided black rat in it. Or maybe some really fancy BP morph.

wow so many responses. thanks guys. so ill be leaning into a ball python or corn. still not sure, i will be attending an expo in long beach October 16, i will post up pics of whichever i get. thanks again for all your help

Personally I think you should always suit your tank to the snake you want, rather than the other way around.
As the tank size is pre-determined, I'd say avoid Boas(even though they are my favourite species) because you are not well acquainted enough to detect the differences in locality, or sub-species in the BC complex.

BCC is a -horrible- option, they are beautiful- but get massive, and with feisty temperament.
Better stay clear of anything other than BCI if you do end up wanting a Boa.
