well i am new to this and i havent read a whole lot of posts.

but i would really be greatful if anybody could help me.

like i said i am buying a new baby corn snake (not sure exactly how young) and i need to know what size tank/cage i should keep it in and what the temp. for a baby should be maintainted around. also do they need like one side warmer than the other if they are in a smaller cage/tank. i have a 2 gallon tank right know to put it in.

i also need to know how old or the length the snake should be before i should move it to a 10 gallon tank that i have.

ne info that can be givin even if the question wasnt asked would be greatly appreciated.

Congratulations on your decision to join our obsession :D

First of all, I dont see any reason that you couldnt put your hatchling directly into the ten gallon tank. It is recommended to use a smaller tank so that the snake doesnt feel overwhelmed and stressed by an abundance of space, but a 10 gallon isnt too big, and in fact I have one younger snake of mine in a ten gallon right now. Yes the snake should have a warmer and cooler side, with the warm side getting up to mid 80s and a cooler side not goind below 70. A hide of some kind should be provided on each side of the tank so that the snake can feel comfortable on both the cool and warm ends of the tank.

Make sure that when you bring your new little friend home you give him/her a few days to adjust before you either handle or try to feed him/her. Also, after feeding make sure that you leave at least a full day before handling.

It is always suggested to pick up a copy of Kathy Love's corn snake manual either prior to or when you purchase your snake.

thx

First off thanks for the help help. I wasnt sure if a 10 gallon tank was to big since its only about 2.5-3 inches long.

i was readng on a post someone said they used a heating pad for under the tank. i know ur supposed to have a mat but they said it was the kind that people use for like sore muscles and thins.
thanks again for the help.

well they may be larger but im not sure. i havent really seen them out of the cage. but they look really tiny.

and if u reply i would like an answer to my ?

I do believe "most" hatchlings run about 10 - 12" give or take a little and depending on the circumstances of incubating and hatching...yadda yadda...

You question was already answered by Joje126 and I agree. 10 gallon tank would suit a hatchling just fine.

I personally would not recommend a human heating pad. People have tried it and with some success but that is not what they were designed for! The heating element is very unpredictable...IMO...and even on "low" have achieve temps far greater than what you and your lil wonder need and/or will tolerate!

IMHO...it's a no no! I wouldn't do it, spend the $15 - $20 on a good UTH and also get a rheostat or something to control the temp. more precisely.

PS. Like Joje said...get Kathy Love's book "Cornsnake manual" and also read previous post here. It will take you some time but the information is priceless!

ok thanks.
i have read some other post and have learned some more info.
BUT these hatchling are not 10" long the are kept in a small container about one inch each way.

The situation your describing with the babies sounds a little shady. Im assuming you are describing the husbandry practices of a pet store.

Personally I would suggest that you look around for some reptile shows near you, or look online for a reputable breeder, again you might find one near you. Even if you can afford to have one shipped, it may be worth your while in the long run, if the pet store animals turn out to be unhealthy or something.

If you decide to buy from the pet store anyway, I would suggest asking lots of questions about how long theyve had the animals, feeding schedules, shedding, and the general health of the animal in question.

In any case, I wish you luck! :)

i know the fact dont sound right but i have seen them.
my ECOLOGY teacher has them and hes the one selling to me because pet stores are not allowed to sell them in my state b/c they are supposedly native to our state. although the only sittings of them were in the late 60's early and 70's and they were both found smashed on the side of the road.
but i know all his snakes are taken care of b/c we students take of them. we clean their cages ( the bigger ones) and feed them 1-2 times a week. i know none of his snakes are sick or mistreated. this class is what got me interested in snakes cause before the class i hated snakes. well i'll let u know how things go and i will post some pic in a few weeks seeing as i do get one.

I'm not sure about the fact here

Unless there is something tragically wrong, corn hatchlings (BTW it is still early to even be hatch snakes) aren't 2-3". I think the smallest that I've ever heard of was maybe 6-8".

I'm going to side with Joje, I'd do some more research before moving forward.

Three inch cornsnakes?!?!?!? There is something REALLY wrong here? I have to agree with the others, I wouldn't take them.

well like i said i havent seen them out of their containers b/c we are not allowed to mess with the baby snakes. but he will sell me one for $15. so as soon as i get the rest of my stuff i will be ready to go. like i said i will post pic asap.
again thanks for the help and info.
