does anyone with over 50 snakes use newspaper and if so.......

how do you like it? Can you give me some pros and cons? I have aspen all over my house and the dust is making me and the snakes crazy. I switched over to newpaper tenatively. I appreciate your input. Thanks.

I've got 75 and I use paper only.

Pros:
1. cheap and easy
2. You can feed in the same container
3. Just dump everything into the trash
4. the snakes hide in the pages (I don't use hides anymore)

Cons:
1. Smells can be more noticeable
2. paper tends to get balled up and into the water bowl
3. the snake always seem to poop in the uncovered corner ;)
4. must fit the page to the container (fold, tear, ect)

if you have alot of snakes, then paper is the only real option. price wise. i mean can you imagine paying for enuff aspen to clean them out once every 2 weeks?
then again if you only have a few snakes, then i like aspen as they love to burrow in it :)

Hey,
I use newspaper for my sub adult and adult corns. For my hatchlings I use the lizard litter that is bigger than sand but smaller than aspen. It works great. I just siff through the litter in the hatchling cages and add new if needed. This gets the big poo chunks out and allows for some recycling. So far I have had no problems whatsoever with it. As for newspaper. It works wonders. I mean the smell is a little more noticable but you don't have woodchips all over your house, it is easy to clean, and saves a bunch of time when it comes to feeding and cleaning.

CAV,

if you were keeping a hatchling in one of the plastic shoeboxes, how many layers of paper would you use?

I usually just fold a paper towel in half for hatchlings in shoeboxes.

I have no idea how many I have...
properly around 500 or so corns in my house. But I don't really like to use paper towels.
Yes the cost is really low. But then you'll have to keep on changing it all the time. Plus I think that using news paper is kind of smelly....I don't really like it. I only use it during breeding season. Once it's time for breeding I use paper towel so that I know if any snakes mated and no need to harm the male's hemipenes (when aspen is stuck on the hemipene...)

I use aspen all year round other wise. It's not really that expensive to get aspen...and it's a lot easier to clean plus a lot less smell.

I am also trying to use alpha chips and beta chips. Those seem to be a good choice too. I am still in the testing phase of those though~~

I find it quite good for now. But I have been using those for around 2 months only.....

I've used newspaper as substrate ever since day 1, and have no real complaints about it. Of course, if I could get just the newspaper without any of the printing on it, that would be about ideal.

I tried newspaper and I didn't like it. I only use paper towels and aspen. I don't really like the paper towels much, either. I use them in all of my shoeboxes and in breeding cages. I also am using them for the snakes that are housed in my daughter's room because it's a pain cleaning aspen off of her floor.

Mike,
What kind of aspen do you use? Is it the really shredded stuff or more like mulch? I have found that the shredded aspen is MUCH less dusty. It also depends on the brand, though.

i use beech-litter. very small shredded. expensive? yes! i only own 25-30 adults average, so its no matter. think europe is a little bit different. must be an eyecatcher as well. but i only own 30 adults, so its no matter. guess most of us in europe are using glass tank. e.g. in my country by law we have to use minimun 0,5 sqm per corn +0.2 sqm for every corn added in the same tank. i´ve a permission from the local veterinarian of the government to hold corns and from time to time he is doing inspections.
as i told you .... europe is different ....

thanks to all who responded

Its been a few weeks now and I think I have it down to a science. It does smell slightly more but no DUST!!!! It was really getting to me. I was tracking Aspen all over the house as well and the little lady was getting fed up. So I switched over to the newspaper for the yearlings and adults and the hatchlings will go on paper towel. Thanks again.

One more suggestion

I have been using corn cob for about six months, I have about fourty corns and it works great. It costs about $12 for a fourty pound bag, which will line about 20 shoeboxes and 20 28qt sterlites. I spot clean it every week, and change it about every two months. I heard that it would cause problems with shedding, but so far have not seen any problems.
