Shed Problem

My snakes just shed, but has a little bit left on the end of his tail (about 1/2 cm). How do I get this off ?? I've tried the damp rag trick, but no success. Every shed so far has been perfect, all in one piece, apart from this one. Any ideas or should I just leave it ???

I had the same problem once...

Well, I had the same problem once and got all sorts of great advice on what to do (and I'm not saying this is the only solution either) but I found the only thing that worked for me was to soak her tail. It only took about 10 minutes and then when she slithered through my fingers after, it came right off. I didn't PULL it off but grabbed her tail gently and let her crawl through my fingers and it slid right off.

Make sure the water isn't too hot and not too cold and then just try and hold her over the water (I just used a little cup of water) with her tail hanging in it. Or you could give her a full out bath, that will work as well.

The important thing is that you DON'T just leave it. Especially not when it's the tail tip or the eyecaps. Your snake will grow but that piece of old skin will not. Eventually it will cut off the circulation in her tail and then end of her tail could fall off, become infected, etc.

Of course, I don't mean to scare you either. If it just happened, it's not a life or death situation. Do the best you can, I'm sure it'll work out.

Total agree with Katie dont just leave it give your snake a warm bath and then let in slide through a towel or your fingers.

I too had this problem... the thing I did was pretty much like what Katie did... I just gave him a full out bath... after about 20 min of soaking... I let him run through my fingers it had more then 1/2 cm to come off... for some reason he had a bad shed... but anyways about 1/4 of him needed to be shed... and after that little bit of time soaking it came right off... you dont even really have to do anything... just check for any signs of the shed still begin on him/her...

I just had the same problem, and just wet the snakes tail with my fingers and run my fingers down its tail till it came loose, no problem at all.

Regards.

Dean. You didn't wet your fingers with your tongue, did you?;)

Just kidding.

Of course I did!!! :)

No just tap water, and as I said no problem at all.

my problem

I recently got a snake that's obviously had more than one bad shed. He was flakey, for one and I was able to get that fixed for him, but he's got a tiny patch (about 5 scales) that seems to have a couple or few layers of old shed (it's a snow, but this patch is brown and crusty.)

Should I wait for a shed to see if he can shed that part now that I maintain a better humidity for him? or should I be seeing my vet?

Speaking of vet - any book recomendations for the home breeder to aid in diagnosis and/or treatment of illness, injury, or infection/infestation?

TIA!
^Curtis
