Gardening-center vermiculite... ok?

This may sound strange to some of you but I like to use vermiculite as my snake's bedding substrate. It retains humidity well if I want to make a damp spot 'cause someone's in shed, the snakes can (and do!) burrow in it, it's easy to scoop poop, not too dusty, and I really like the way it looks. I'm sure we all have our personal snake-keeping quirks, and vermiculite's mine! Anyway, I've been buying herp quality vermiculite for some time now, and am kind of sick of paying what I'm sure is a highly elevated price on normal vermiculite. Yes, I've asked around a bit, and everyone seems to say that getting vermiculite from a gardening store is just as good, and a lot cheaper. Some have recommended baking it in an oven for 10 min just to make sure it's sterile (not a bad idea, for microorganisms...)

I have a bag I got from the gardening store and it says on the back "we recommend wearing gloves when using this product and all other gardening soils and fertilizers." That's probably just the dummy warning they put on all their products, but it's got my paranoia up. Can anyone tell me if it should be ok or not ok to put snakes on gardening store vermiculite? Might the vermiculite have any funky chemicals in it that is ok for plants but not for herps? FYI, the brand is "Sta-Green horticultural vermiculite" and it does say on the back that the only "soil ammending ingredient" is vermiculite 100%. Whatchall think guys, ok/not ok/try it on a single snake first...?

Thanks so much!
