Whats in a name??

I named my corn snake Eros for the greek god of love because he has a little heart shaped spot.

My Daughter named her snake after John Dillinger. Since he is a ghost and Dillinger's ghost is supposedly haunting somewhere in Chicago.

I was wondering where everyone came up with their names....

Well. I named my ball python Ramesses, since ball pythons are from africa, so I thought the pharaoh's name was fitting.
Dastan my boa is named after the Prince of Persia, because Jake Gyllenhaal was hot in that movie..
Gambit the hognose is named after Gambit from X men.
Owl is named Owl because I was trying to find native american names for him when he was a baby and I just came across the word Owl while searching and that seemed super fitting.
Envy took me months to name, I'm not sure how I came to that conclusion.
Zephyr just seemed like a zephyr the second I picked him up.
Flatline is named for her severe kink in her back, as I described the shape her spine was in I made a line with my hand and then a sharp turn up and back down, and my boyfriend said, "So kinda like a flatline?" And I said yeah- and so Flatline it was.
Amethyst.. my boyfriend named her, it seemed fitting.
Arizona is named for her beautiful desert oranges and browns.. and an Owl and Penny song

And since I got to name the snakes I am baby sitting over break..
Mischief is the black rat snake, since everyone thinks she is really nippy but she is not.
And Squatch, the cali king, because he is a jerk, which made me think of beef jerky and therefore the messin with sasquatch commercials.

I named my snake (an okeetee) Cynder Ella because I like dragons and I was looking for female dragon names (which aren't many) then I came across a female dragon from the video game Spyro named Cynder and I realized that Cynder can kind of go with her colors too like a hot cinder and also we kind of have a thing of naming our pets disney names for example we have a cat named Koda and a dog named Kenai (both from brother bear). So I realized with Cynder I could also add Ella to make Cinderella but writing it Cynder Ella. We just call her Cynder though.

I REALLY like this thread. It is very interesting how our pets' names come to be. Mine are really not very interesting though. I named Diablo because I wanted something dark...although I was afraid people would think he was named for the video game. I liked Pandora for a name because I always loved Anne Rice and she wrote a story about a beautiful vampire named Pandora. I liked Athena because I loved Greek mythology when I was a kid and always thought it sounded pretty and etheral....like my opal.

I have always found this interesting, too. In fact, here's a thread I started a while back.

I like to name my snakes after characteristics they have. Sienna and Mango are named for their colors. Firefly is so bright she glows, so that's how she got her name.

I look forward to hearing more name stories.

Piglet is named that because he is pink and a pig. My daughter named Eve, kind of a play on adam and eve. Serj is named after the lead singer of System of a down, my sons favorite band. HarleyQuinn is named after a dc villian, my husband is a comic geek. BobbieSue was named after Bob Brown, the breeder I got her from. All the others are named after guns!

I have two amels named Carmine and Rufus. Those are both shades of red.

FinFang - comic book monster, Fin Fang Foom.
Amel Boy - Uhhhhh ya. It was only supposed to be temporary, but it stuck.
Thanagar - Fictional planet from comic books, it's where Hawkman is from.
Cardassia - Fictional planet form Star Trek
Moss - Big lump of a boa who latches on and doesn't care to move.

Dallas, Abilene, Odessa - corn/bull hybrids, the male's a Texas bullsnake/corn so I kept the city name theme for the girls

wow I am amazed by the names and the stories behind the names. Can not wait to come back and read more. I have seen piglet just an adorable snake. I like that some are from favorite characters or named after their looks or along a theme.

So far, all my cornsnakes have names based on Anne Rice characters. Lestat, Akasha, Marius, Pandora, Lydia, Mayfair.
My black milksnakes are Wrath and Envy. 7 deadly sins (and Fullmetal Alchemist tie in)
My gargoyle geckos are from the world of J.R.R. Tolkien. Eldar and Avari.

My green tree python took me over a year to give an official name! For the longest time, he was just "the GTP". Until I realized his striking at me while hanging onto his perch reminded me of the chain chomps from Mario brothers. So his name is "Chain Chomp"!

I love reading the stories behind the names Ialso went back and read a previous link. I believe snake owners are very creative!!!

Frost-a snow motley with frosted scales..no story to it lol

Medusa-lavender motley-first time I held her she made a beeline for my hair & kept poking her head out

Ruby-amel motley-named for her intense red coloring when we first got her..now she's getting more orange lol

I talk to my snake (and pets, and inanimate objects...), and a name like Eros I would probably always being imploring the snake "for the love of god, Eros, please just eat the pinky" and such . The symmetry of the phrase amuses me.

Anyway, to your question. I named my corn snake Sherlock based on his inquisitive personality, eating habits (unfortunately he's taking after his name sake), and yellow head mark. It just fits. My next snake (once I move into my own place) will be a ball python that I intend to name Mycroft. In the books, Sherlock Holmes has a brother, Mycroft, who is perhaps smarter than his brother, but less energetic and corpulent. Well, I'll let Doyle describe his own character (see "The Bruce-Partington Plans"), but I swear it reads like an artistic description of a ball python:

Alright, maybe it's a bit of a stretch (I certainly don't consider pythons gross in anyway), but it's more of a wholistic metaphor.

In keeping with the theme, I eventually would like a king snake named Moriarty. Not sure what I will name my future milk snake (Irene perhaps?).

Booger : because he has a yellow nose
Snotz : because booger was taken
Mudbug or Muddy : bought in Baton Rouge where they call crawfish mudbugs
Pumpkin: because he is an orangish color
Cranberry: because she is as red as a cranberry
Parkay: because she is a butter
Hoodini: She is awesome at getting out
Sunshine: (WC) found on a sunny day
Takeout or Amber: was brought home in a takeout container
Cajun: also purchase in Baton Rouge
Amale: because amel was to easy
Sunglowy: Sunglow
Mr. bubbles: blew bubbles coming out of his egg
Grim Brothers: not really brothers but have a very grim (bad) attitude(tail rattlers) and you can not tell them apart, one is girl, the other a boy
Jellybean or JB: came to us from Morgan already named and it fits, nice and yellow
Peanut: are largest 2011 corn
Mongo: the smallest 2011 corn
Spots: well he is a sunspot corn, just fits
PJ: project female.. has a lot of hets

Mystery: cause we don't know "yet" what she is
Ice cube: came to us half frozen, poor girl, but she is doing just fine now

Gweilo: after balls of fury... very round eyes
Crush: because he remids us of orange crush

With my snakes I am trying to stick with a music scheme.

Jade (normal corn) - named after Jade Puget from AFI.

Ambellina (Baird's rat snake) - a character from the comic books all the music by Coheed and Cambria is based on.

Yorke (Baird's rat snake) - named after Thom Yorke from Radiohead

Purkinje (Hognose snake) - this one goes against the music theme...I am a science nerd and when taking physiology in college, we learned about Purkinje fibers in the heart and I thought it was such a cool term that I wanted to name something Purkinje. Initially I thought it would make a great name for a potbelly pig, but since I will probably will never have one of those, I used it as the name for my hognose snake.

I also have a turtle named Bernini after Gian Lorenzo Bernini (I was reading Angels and Demons when I rescued him) and a cat named Bucky after Richard Buckminster Fuller the inventor of the geodesic dome.

I only have one, a butter female named Estelle. Estelle means "star", and stars are yellow, and she is yellow! Plus, she has a "star" personality!! I wanted a name that sounded...idk...non-snakeish? So when people meet her, they think "This is Estelle. It sounds like a French Poodle or something. So since French Poodles are nice, so is she!"

I also had a pet named Bucky, except he was a chinchilla. We got him from our aunt who had named him Bucky because they were Ohio Buckeye fanatics.

Mallie, my first snake, is short for Maligne. It's French--I think it meant Clever? It's been awhile... Lol. It sounded like a good name, considering snakes are supposed to be sneaky and clever. These days, though, she's just "Mallie"--it even took me a minute to remember what it's short for... Heh.

As for the rest, I've taken to naming them after cartoon characters from my childhood (mostly late 90s/early 2000s), with a few (still media-themed) exceptions.

Man Ray: My beardie boy started the cartoon theme... A week after we rescued him, it popped in my head and just seemed to fit. He's named after the villain on Spongebob Squarepants, who Spongebob and Patrick tortured into being a good guy with a tickle/laugh belt.

Blossom and Buttercup: Two female beardies I took in last year, named after the PowerPuff Girls. I since found new homes for both of them, but I plan on keeping with the theme--if I ever get my Blue Tongue Skink, it will be named Bubbles. (With an alternative of "The Dirty Bubble" should it turn out to be male--another Spongebob villain!)

Patrick: A little rescue beardie, who didn't make it... Named after Patrick from Spongebob.

Dexter and Dee Dee: My yearling & hatchling corns. Named for Dexter's Laboratory.

Numbah's 1, 2, and 3, aka Nigel, Hoagie, and Kookie: Since I just kept calling my first Tarantula #1 (knowing there would probably be more, later), I decided to go the obvious route and name them with a Codename: Kid's Next Door theme. I might be in trouble if I wind up with more than 5 T's...

Toby: Not for a cartoon... My little Gopher snake was actually named for the Sweeney Todd character. (That and I really like the name Toby!)

Raven: My boa, originally named because she was obsessed with (aka, hated) anything shiny or that glowed white (like my phone's screen) when I got her. She's since gotten over that, and I'm playing with the idea of moving forward with a Teen Titans theme for any further BCIs...

Volvagia: Albino Whitewater Rosy Boa, so named for the red dragon Fire Temple boss on Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (my favorite video game as a kid). If she isn't fed weekly and approached carefully, she's liable to think you're food... Just ask my dad, whose knuckle she tried to swallow the day I got her!

Shruikan: Anza Borrego Rosy Boa, named for Galbatorix's dragon in the Eragon series. S/he's insane about food, tries to eat everything--including metal and air! I thought it was quite fitting, to name him after a dragon who's described as entirely insane, whose sole desire has become the destruction of everything in sight..

That about sums it up.. I'm still working on the right names/themes for the tortoises and the Woma. (Though I may just stick with the Dragon theme for the Woma--I do quite like the name "Fírnen," another throwback to Eragon.)

And, speaking of interesting name themes... My and my grandma's dog are brothers, the only 2 in the litter. The story goes that the breeder let her sister name them, and the sister decided to name them "Tree" and "Stump"... Probably the weirdest pet name match-up I've ever heard! But surprisingly accurate... Stump kept his name, while my grandma changed Tree's name to "Mac". Stump turned out to be quite stocky and of a solid temperament, while Mac/"Tree" is very lightly-built--"thin," so to speak--and wispy, with a rather neurotic temperament.

Don't really remember exactly how most of mine got their names. But the name Octavius popped into my head when I got my first corn, I'd been reading a lot of Roman history. I really liked the shortened version, either Tavius or Tavia for male or female and since I ended up with an unsexed snake, thought Tavi worked well for a non-gender specific name. I've always liked the name Stormy and since I decided on a female Phantom corn, that was just too perfect not to use, even though it's been done a lot. Then I'd recently read a book with a spy who was very phantom like in his ability to change his appearance and one of his cover names was Vash, which I liked, about the time I got those two. Also read a dragon based book around then that one of the dragons was named Vash too. So that's how my male Phantom corn came to be named. Had read several books with characters named Sebastian and liked the name. It seemed to fit my male Rosy boa. My mom named the female Rosy, Esme, I believe after a snake in a movie but I don't remember the title.
Then was trying to find a non-gender specific name for my first crested gecko, didn't know what he was at first. My mom came up with Miami. Then when I got another, decided to go with a place name, geographical location name theme for the cresteds. So named the second Maui. Then bought Cairo, already named but it fit. Then Luxor, the future mate to Cairo. All of the offspring I've gotten from Cairo so far have been named after alphabetical locations in Idaho, mostly counties or towns. Arimo, Arco, Blaine, Bannock, Camas and Cache, based on order laid and hatched. With the Gargoyle gecko, I was stumped for a long time, then Gizmo popped into my head. If I get another garg, I will probably name it Gadget.
