Breeding Loan

I have a question for those of you that do breeding loans. I have never been involved in a breeding loan but I got an offer from someone who has a breeding size Female Bp that they'd like for me to breed to my male spider. He also has a male red tail to breed to my female red tail(this hasn't been fully discussed though).

My main question is, do I need to draw up a contract? If so what should it detail. And also while I don't think anything will happen... What happens if something does happen to the snake? What happens if only one morph comes from the clutch? Or if the red tails were to breed and they pop out an unexpected morph? What happens if she never lays eggs? What happens if they don't want to give back my female red tail, I plan on having their home addy but they're going to be bringing the female ball here and picking up the red tail at the same time.

Any other advice on doing a loan is also appreciated!

I would draw up a contract. I also only do breeding loans with people I know fairly well. That being said, we had an incident here where a member of about a year took snakes from a number of people (that she had met in person previously) and disappeared off the face of the earth with them. Cut off contact completely; someone who was trying to investigate was told by the police that she wanted them to cease and desist. So you never know.

You should discuss and cover in the contract your above-mentioned points, as well as what happens if the snake requires veterinary care or even surgery while in your possession, or what happens if she experiences complications and dies? (Most likely nothing- but you would want it in writing that way).

You also need to allow time for proper quarantine of the new snake coming in, and I have started requiring a negative PCR test for crypto before I'll take an adult in for breeding.

Nanci made some great points and I like the crypto test idea. I would definitely write up a contact and I wouldn't bend on making them sign it or if something doesn't feel right walk away. Anyone who is not willing to sign a contract is not good enough to have my snakes. lol That being said I have a pair on breeding loan, actually from one of the members who had her snakes stolen (I feel honored she trusted me), but I gave her all the info I could think of without her even asking. How her snakes would be housed the entire time they were here. What her snakes would be fed. I wanted her to be comfortable with me and I would expect someone would be willing to do the same for me.

Nanci did make some great points. If you feel uncomfortable in any way, trust your gut. My gut unfortunately was clueless, and I lost 4 of my babies.

Christen, thank you again for taking such good care of my kids. I love how often you update me, and feel absolutely secure in our arrangement. :)
