How often to feed?

I would like to get your opinion on feeding. Do you find it better to feed young snakes 2 or 3 pinkies at once or is it better to feed them 1 pinkie twice a week.

I have just got 2 great 03' corns that have been on a "maintenance" schedule of a pinkie a week. I would like to start getting some size on them. They are great feeders and I want to move them up to two pinkies a week just don't know which is the better method. When I was breeding corn snakes years ago I would feed multiple food items once a week. But the breeder I got my snakes from suggested feeding them twice a week.

Thanks,
Jeff C.

I feed my young snakes every 4 days when they are not in blue phase (about to shed)

I actually keep all my snakes on this cycle. I prefer using smaller meals more frequently over using a large meal every week or two.

I feed my hatchling/yearlings every 5-7 days on meals that are around 1.5 the largest sectoin of the snake.

For adults I feed every 10-14 days on the same scale (size) as the hatchling/yearlings.

I would go for the larger meal less often. If you start feeding twice a week you may not give them time to finish digesting the first before you offer the second.

I follow a schedule similar to Simon. I feed hatchlings every 5 days, juveniles/yearlings every 6 days, and adults every 7 to 10 days.

I will be getting my '03 motley girl soon. :) I guess she is considered a yearling. When are corns considered adults?

Of course I will get feeding info from the breeder, but am curious after reading this thread when to increase the time between feeds.

Thanks!

My '03 is fed every 7 days. When she was eating two of anything, I would move up to the next size feed. She's now on one small adult and a hopper. My other '03 is on one fuzzy.

I got mine at my local pet store, but you can order it directly off Kathy's website, or from Amazon.com.

You can get an autographed one from her website. I also heard that a new one is coming out in 2005. I would go with feeding multiple items once a week rather than twice a week because of the same reason others suggestesd (digestion times.)

definitely get the book! I'm almost done reading it and it's a fantastic piece of work - very well written and informative.

I've got a GHOST CORN i bought from ED's PETWORLD the guy had no knowledge of the snakes origins or age. MR LEE as I call him ( paying my homage to the late great BRUCE LEE ) IS ABOUT 14" length and i feed him 2 times a week and the feedings consist of 2-3 fuzzies, hoppers, gerbies or whatever the petstore has on hand at that time I bought MR LEE on march the 28 and he has shed 4 times already and gaining weight and length on that food plan . sorry for the long story bout nothing anybody out there got a ghost or seen 1 give me a holler

That's an awful lot of food for a 14" snake. My 31" is getting one adult small mouse and a hopper. She was only on large pinkies when I got her and she was 18". You don't want to feed too much and get excessive growth. It's not healthy for them. Hoppers seem too big. Maybe a small fuzzy.....maybe.....

I was thinking the same thing, Meg. But I 'spose different strokes for different folks!

Whoa! Thats like five or six fuzzies a week. I have like a fifteen to sixteen inch motley and just started feeding it three pinks once a week until I could get some fuzzies of which I was planning to feed once a week.

Exactly Spitfire. I was up to a couple of large pinkies and then went to fuzzies. When I got to two fuzzies and she was actively looking for food in one day, I went up to hoppers. I think this is called power feeding when you feed a lot of food very often. I would cut back on the feeding and let the snake grow at a more normal rate. Even my 20" Aztec is only feeding on one fuzzy right now.
