Shedding

My snow has been in shed for over a week. Its shedding in very tiny pieces and only 1 or 2 pieces came off around the head. But the rest of the body looks really pale and the skin is loose. I misted the cage once a day while he was shedding but he just wont shed :( He just hides in his waterbowl hide all day and doesnt even try to shed. I gave him a bath and tried to wipe some of the skin off but it wont come off. Should i be worried? He ate fine but only ate 1 of his normal 2 pinkies. He seems kindof uncomfortable and he cant see very good because he gets kindof scared if i go to pick him up but he doesnt strike. (he never struck) Any idea's on what i should do? I would greatly apriciate it.

How long have you had him? Did he seem healthy otherwise? Proper size for it's age? It's odd for a corn snake to soak so much. Get the snake out of the water bowl and look inside. Do you see anything resembling grains of pepper on the bottom? Check the tank too (easiest to see on paper towel). Sometimes a mite infestation will cause bad sheds, and an uncomfortable snake that wants to soak (drown the mites). If the snake was a pet store purchase it's likely to have them, although they can come from breeders as well. Look hard, they can be hard to spot, especially in small numbers. Do a search for snake mites and you will find information on treatments.

Also, how are the temps in the cage? Does it have a spot where it can cool off to room temperature (and warm up to the mid 80s or so).

theres no mites or anything and when i got him he was pretty active but since he went into shed he is inactive. His temps are fine and when i hold him he is pretty active (toung flicks often) its just this horrible shed thats bothering him:( (by the way i didnt mean in the water bowl i meant under it sorry:rolleyes: )

No problem, that's a little different than staying in the water dish. How is he doing now? Depending on what it is now, you may find putting the temperature up a bit higher will help him while he's in shed. Is this his first shed with you, or has he had normal sheds before?

Instead of misting the cage, I usually make a humid hide available to aid in shedding if the snake needs it. I cut a hole in the side of a plastic container (you can use a deli cup) and put some moistened paper towel - or you can use an alternative such as sphagnum moss - inside. That way the humid retreat is available should they need it, and you don't need to make the whole enclosure damp.

Try not to bother him too much so you don't stress him out during this time, and hopefully he'll continue his shed. If not, I would try soaking in tepid water, or leaving him in with some damp rags. If this doesn't work, I think a call to the vet might be in order. Would be a good idea to make sure there's not an underlying problem here. Retained shed can cause problems in itself. If you purchased him from a breeder, you should be able to give them a call and ask for advice.

Good luck and I hope he sheds soon!

This is his first shed with me and the breeder didnt give me her number. I will try the moist hide thing and i wont mist anymore. Thanx for the advice and i hope he sheds soon. Im kinda worried :(
