Hi
Early this week I accquired a cornsnake, now, let me tell you, I am completely new to this, and have never owned a snake before or any reptile for that matter. I have a question about the heating in the cage. I have a infrared spotlight on top of the cage that shines down on to one side, I was just wondering how long I leave the light on for cause it gets really warm really fast about 4 inches down the temp is around 97 and at about 8 inches down it is still about 92, are those temps alright? Cause everything that I have read says the warm side should be around 85.

how deep is the tank in which the snake is living my tank is roughly 12" deep and i have an exo-terra 60 watt bulb that keeps the temp at 82 degrees 6" down and thats at one end of the tankfor his hot zone and the other end is his cool zone but MR LEE just eats and burrows into the aspen chips ( substrate )

The tank is about 2.5 ft deep, 1.5 wide, and maybe 5 feet long. I was wondering if I should leave it on constantly or just turn it on peridoically?

well see my wife keeps the thermo on the house dumped to freezing temps so i leave mine on 16-20 hours during the day . i try to turn it off to give him a sense of day and night why i dont know but they do need the heat for digestion . you might want to try a lower wattage bulb.

Since corn snakes are active at night time, I would have thought it was bad for them to keep the light on full time. In our viv we have a heat mat under one end which is permanently on, and a normal 40 watt light bulb which is on during the day. The snakes tend to sleep all day and get active once the light is switched off at 7pm, which is normal behaviour.

If your viv is 2.5 feet deep, and is 97 degrees at the top, it is probably a bit cool down at snake level. But you need to check by measuring the temperature down there! You want it at least 80, preferably 85, but definitely not more than 90. 70 - 75 for the cool end.

If the temps are too cool for your snakes, they will not be able to digest food and will not thrive.

Hope this helps.

David
