Whats the max ration for a 20 gallon long tank?

I have been successful in keeping 6 females to one male. However, you really need to maintain ideal conditions (food, temps, housing). In general I keep one male with 4 females for my feeders. For my English mice I actually rotate males between several female tubs.

1.4 Rats and 1.7 mice seems to work great
The mice I agree with the rats I don't.

5 rats in a 20 gal tank is asking for respiratory problems. Tanks are really good at holding moisture, with their limited air flow this is the perfect opportunity for ammonia to build up.

My small enclosure that I keep rats in is 27 ½” x 19 ¾” x 6" and I only keep a 1:3 ratio. A 20 gal is either 24"x12"x16" for a tall or 30"x12"x12" for a long.

My personal opinion is that no rats should be kept in aquariums due to the potential for respiratory problems. This does not mean that they cant be kept successfully in aquariums, only that my experience has shown it to be a problem.

I have kept 1.4 rats in a cement mixing tub rack system for years and never had problems, I also had them in a 20gal when I first started breeding rats (years before I ever thought of ever owning a reptile) and never has repratory problems, I use ossceola pine shavings for horse stalls, which is a bit more dusty then most, but my rodent room also has a couple fans in it to cool it down, the most I can say is the less rats you decide to keep in 1 tank the better, but I personaly have naver had a problem with 1.4 rats in a 20 gal or cement tub.
