I've just got a new corn snake and when I have handled it it has pooed on me. why does it do this and how can i stop it? Also I have a bulb which is uncovered do you know were I could buy a cover? I also have a heat pad amd it does not have a thermostat will that be OK/ When is the best time to handle them?

Thanks!1

hahahaha. Uhmmm..... i mean yuk :)

As long as the snake can't reach the lamp and burn himself you shouldn't need a cover. If you do want one go to an exotic pet shop. At least here in Holland i've often found these things sold there. Though any handyman might have something simulair in stock.

I personally wouldn't want to use a heat mat without a thermostat. It does depend on the make, but some of them can get remarkably hot.

Snakes will often poop when they are nervous and trying to escape. With continued gentle handling your snake will probably get used to you. Alternatively, don't pick him up 'til after he has pooped. If you always put him down when he has pooped on you that will show him that it is a good method to get you to let go of him, so bear that in mind.

skys has a good point there, he will learn that if your not careful :)

i do not have heat pads for mine, but i am planning to invest in a thermostat and heat pads for the winter or night. i have light bulbs and none are covered, my male is the only one who can reach his, and unfortunately he has managed to burn himslf, he was wrapped around it and i caught him and took him of it, and afterwards he had this awful black mark and he proper flinched every time i touched him there, took him to the vet and he just said he'll be fine as long as i kept an eye on the skin around the burn, as it might get infected, but he was fine. this was about 5 yars ago, he still has a black mark there till this day, oh and about 5 sheds after this the burn was still there, so thats how deep it is, real dangerous, however still do not have a cover on it and hehasnt gone near it since. hehe. he has learnt. :)

Some UTH are okay depending on how much substrate etc you have on it, what I do for test is have it on and put my hand in the spot that its at, to check for temp, if you can feel that it is too hot then it needs to be fixed.

There are some online stores that sell herp supplies where they have a outer cage for lamps. Might be something to look in to.

I can't help you with the poo part, mine has not done that to me yet.. I say yet..

I sounds like if you can secure it and it seems safe enough that its not touching the viv, it should be safe.

If you have it in the cage the snake will go through the chicken wire.

I am not really sure how you have your viv set up.

I personally would not have a light in the viv with my snake. I have read too many horror stories on the forum with that one.
