how often to completely clean tank?

i do spot checks often and clear any faeces or urine, but how often does the tank need the substrate totally changed, and the tank disinfected? the guy in the reptile shop (not the one i got marty from) says as long as there are constant spot checks and regularly cleaning the water bowl, then it should only be every 2 or 3 months.

btw i use wood chips as substrate
