While I was attending to the dog's bathroom needs tonight at 1am, I spied a "floating leaf" off across the yard. As I went to investigate, I came upon this.

Spider1.JPG

A giant orb weaver spider with a katydid in its clutches and being relished as a meal. The web had to have been one of the largest I've seen, it went from oak tree limb to spruce tree limb to the ground, and was easily 2 ft tall by 1 ft wide. Definitely overkill for a quarter sized spider. =P

I made sure not to disturb and I grabbed me up a chair and enjoyed the show for a few minutes and snapped some killer pics (every bit of pun intended). =D

Hope you enjoy the pics, I know I enjoyed taking them. It's funny how the simplest of things entertain country folk. And I think she definitely needs to invest in some leg shaving equipment, those are the prickliest legs I've seen in a long time. =P

I agree!! Great pics!

By the way, if anyone would like to see picture of a katydid WITHOUT a prickly spider knawing on it, here is one. It was hanging on the side of my house for a day.

Thanks for the comments guys, I appreciate it! I think I just got lucky. The flash was illuminating just perfectly and the black back ground of the night sky was helping as well.

While in my quest to identify the spider I came across this awesome webpage with pictures that viewers send in and all sorts of spider info. So I thought I'd share it with you.

The owner is based in Australia, but there are a lot of pics send in by us Americans with some really pretty spider pictures.

My gosh! Those pics blew me away! They look straight out of a book or national geographic. I kinda chuckled at the "expression" on the katydids's face. Kinda reminded me of those SouthWest commercials..."Wanna get away?" :sidestep:
