Pin-pointing age of baby mice?

Amanda E

Is there a list of things to note in order to pin-point the age of baby mice?

I've found this, but that's it:

Pigment starts to show: from 3rd day forward
First coat has developed: at 10 days
Eyes open: 12-13 days

Does this data seem right to you, because it doesn't to me.

Is there anything else that you can use to pin-point their age better?

I must admit that I don't watch over my mice as well as I probably should. There is a period of 3 days that my female could have given birth, but I don't know which day. The reason I would like to know when she gave birth is so I know when to wean them, as I would like to do so before she gives birth to her next litter.

They were born between Sept 5th and the 7th, yet they already have hair and have had it at least since yesterday, so according to the above data, they should have been born at the latest by the night of Sept 3th, which is impossible. The earliest they could have been born is the night of the 5th.

Should I just go by the 5th as that seems to be the most plausible date according to the above info? I did see her paying a bunch of attention to her butt on the 5th. Did that mean she was just getting ready to have babies in the next few days or did it mean that she was going into labor right then? That would clarify everything if that signifies labor.

I never know when my mice are born, but i wean them when they're eyes are open and they're ears pop up. You have a bit of a window of age for weaning. It is best to be able to simply identify which ones are ready by development.

I think they can be weaned when they start eating solid foods and drink from the bottle. You might want to suppliment them with soy formula after you take them away from their mother.

Its been almost 2 weeks for my babies to be hoppers, just about full hair and they open their eyes 2 days ago.

I think for dates it kind of hard depending on the size litter. My mamma mouse has babies just about every 20 days.

I noticed when we took out pinkies (gave it 3 days) Split the litter in half the mice that we left grew faster.
Female mice have 10 tits on them, so atleast 10 babies can feed pretty well. They feed well they will grow fast. So dates very.

Hope this helps.
