heating a "kritter keeper"

R.I.P. ashes
how should i heat a kritter keeper for a corn snake, i am using a uth right now and i think it is best... i have a zoomed uth and a dimmer( the dimmer has "full power" and 4 other settings, which setting do you think i should put it on???)

I think you should buy a thermometer and find out what temps it's reading at each intervul. That would be your first step.

I have a feeling a kritter keeper on an UTH would be too much, even if it is on low. Those are some pretty small cages, and UTHs are pretty powerful. What size cage are you using?

i have a kritter keeper that is a little bigger than a 2.5 gal, and when i put the uth on low, i can hardly even tell it is on.

Your body temp is 98 degrees...anything less than that will feel somewhat cool to the touch! Hence the IMPORTANCE of thermometers!

It might feel cool to you while to your animal it is very hot, make sense? Get a thermometer please before you place your animal in this enclosure!

Hi there. I agree about the thermometer. Also, for a container that size, I recently saw a really small UTH-like heater that basically looked like a small piece of heat tape rigged (with a plug) and safe for plastic containers at my local Petco. That combined with a thermometer and possible dimmer should do the trick.

Babbaloo99 I saw those to they were for hermit crab heaters, It maybe sufficent to use with that small enclosure. But get the temp gauge :) to be on the safe side.

Your getting some good advice....

You need to be cautious using a relatively small Kritter Keeper with a UTH. The majorities of UTHs are made for 10-20 gallon tanks and can quickly overheat a 2.5-gallon KK, even with a dimmer.

You need to get a thermometer and verify the actual temps inside the container. I cannot stress this fact enough. Quigs is right on with his post in that you can't accurately determine the difference between 75-90 F by feel alone. This range will appear cool to the touch for you, but can be devastating to your snake.
