Cannibalism in newly hatched babies?

Amanda E

Snake Addict!
I'm just curious... I've seen the photos of hatchlings that have cannibalized their brothers or sisters, but has this always happened after the first shed? Or have there been occurrences of cannibalism before the first shed as well?

I try to separate my hatchlings into their own cages as soon as possible, but usually for the first day or two at least a few have to share their cages with a brother or sister, before I can set up everyone's new homes. I've always thought the worry was only after the first shed, but now I'm wondering if I've tempted fate. I don't need to worry about this right now, because all my hatchlings are now in their own cages, but I'd like to know for next year's hatchlings, as I plan to have twice as many clutches than this year so it will be doubly hard to get them their own cages right away.

I've never had hatchlings before but I thought I read somewhere that most hatchling won't eat until after their first shed. I would think you would be safe until their first shed.

right, I would say that they would eat their brothers around the time they *normally* start eating other things.

I have kept hatchlings together until their first shed without a problem. But as with anything else, you never can tell!If it is a snake that I really want,it goes right into a separate container.
