Registered? Do i need to?
my friend has a corn (and im getting one soon :crazy02: ) but i dont know what gender my friend's corn is. im going to (hopefully) get the opposite sex so that i can get them to (hopefully) breed. is there any way of telling their gender easily?

No easy way

I don't think there is any easy way. I think it is easier to try to guess when they are 6-12 months depending on thier size, but this does take practice and is not 100% accurate. The only way to know for sure is to have them probed. And you should both get "The Corn Snake Manual" by Kathy love, it has some great information you will need to know. Good luck with your corns.__Twyla

Actually you can tell by the shape of their tales. It usually takes a little practice but the Corn Snake Manual does have a section in there on how to determine sex by their tales. I used it and was right on the ones I had probed.

there's another method that envolves a little bit more work and again, it's just a guess but wait until it sheds. I read it off of here somewhere...i believe it was amanda e who was talking about this method but i'm not sure.

count the # of belly scales before the vent

then subtrat the # of scales post vent (they're in pairs, count each pair as one)

# > 154 then usually it's a female
#< 154 then it's a male. The further away from 154 you are then the more accurate the answer.

I've tested it against 3 of my knowns and came up with 162-female 158-female and a 149 for my male. I've used it on 2 unknowns which i thought were females due to tail shape and i got 161 and 158 so i'm pretty sure they are females. Again, that takes a little extra effort for only a guess but it doesnt involve probing and popping which should only be done by experienced handlers. The major drawbacks to this is what happens when you get 152 through 156. It's a toss up when they are in that range.

Any chance someone can post a few pics of this? I can't seem to find any pics online on how to tell by looking at the tail...

Thanks in advance. :)

Yep, it was me, but I haven't had too much luck with it lately. It works with the 4 adults I've counted, but with every hatchling I've tried it with recently I keep ending up with numbers in the range of 153-155 and those numbers are just not giving me any idea as to the sex. Unless the scales of these babies are just too small and I'm miscounting them or something.

As far as what gender I prefer... that would be female. Although in certain circumstances, you might want a male, because you could breed him with multiple females in one season, whereas each female can only be bred by one male per year.

Ok, after a snake sheds its skin, you can see if its a male or female by looking at the fresh skin. Were the vent is on the shed you will see what looks to be a reddish substance might look like blood or a clear liquide, there will be one pc of this substance if female and two pcs if male. If your not understanding then here its is again. When snakes shed their skin in one full pc, skin comes out from the vent and that pc is what Im talking about.

Another thing is that females have shorter tails then males, usually.

Hope this helps anyone

I have 4 females, and one male. All but one female are easy going, so I think it just depends on the snake. Some are calm, some aren't. The very calmest of the bunch is a female.
