Securing Lids

Hi, I'm new to the forum! I've decided that I'm going to get a corn snake and then if I can handle that well get a ball python. I've never had a snake before but I'm no newb to exotic pets. I have a 75 gallon set aside for the boa (yeah I know it's a bit much but I'd rather make use of it than buy something smaller and let a huge tank full of nothing take up space) and I'll be purchasing a smaller aquarium, proably in the 27 gallon range for the corn. My question is: what are some good ways to secure cage lids? I've heard something about clamps or belt buckles or something but it didn't sound too convincing to me...(I need the info for both the corn snake and the ball python but the answer should be the same for both AFAIK). A side-opening reptile display tank with a lock is pretty much out of the question unless there are no other quality options. What do you use/suggest?

Welcome! :)

There are terrarium tanks- they are basically aquariums that have a screen top that slides on with a plastic lock, or a metal S hook (I have two I use for the new snakes)
I prefer cages specifically made for snakes- side opening, made from some type of plastic mostly because it is makes the husbandry so much easier- there are far less issues with humidity, cleaning, etc... the two types of cages I use are www.barrs.com this is a great company, great cages, very light, and lock up very nicely, they are slightly raised so you can provide under the tank heating with no worries, they have some custom stuff available so you can get the right cage for the right snake (vents, screens, perchs), and are stackable without the need of shelving- if space is at a premium -they are more expensive than an aquarium, but they are very reasonably priced! and built for snakes not fish ;), I also have cages from www.freedombreeder.com these are also built for snakes, but I use them for my larger pythons.
hope this helps! good luck & keep us posted!

i use clamps and...

have never had a problem with them, neither of my snakes have ever escaped and corns know how to!!! if there is actually way they would have found it by now...more than once. the clamps are cheap and easy to find at most local pet supply stores.

If you buy a metal framed screen top. use velcro on two sides and use the clips as well.
Even the toughest of corns can't get out of that!
From my experience

Thanks, I think I'm going to go with the clamps...how many do you suggest I use and where should I position them on the lid? (It'll be a metal-framed wire lid on an aquarium)...I think the middle of the longer sides are 2 obvious places, anywhere else?

I have 4 on each of my tanks, one on each side. I also have weights, though, on the top of each one since I've had an escapee before. Just extra peace of mind! :)

I've never used clamp's but have used velcro with a couple of large books on top, like an encyclopedia or 2 to wiegh it down. Only had 2 corn's escape in 15 years of dealing with corns.

Hey WhitLips, I have a question for you, and I might send you an email/PM about it. I noticed that you have Barrs cages, and I was wondering if you use UTH's on them, and if you do, do you do anything diffrent in placing them. I just bought two, and I do not want to take the risk of melting the cages (plastic bottoms) within my first week of getting them up and running (plan on having them up next week in my new appartment). Please let me know.

Dayum, they should let you run the prisons, no jail breaks then :) . Seriously, two clamps on each of the longs sides had worked for me, but your mileage may vary.

Got your message & sent one back... just making sure you got it! :)

i have used a method on all my tanks and customers tanks with great success as follows :-
1)make a tight fitting wooden frame made of 18mm x 40mm batoning that fits the tank.

2) cut a peice of 18mm thick board to fit the frame, this board is then cut into 2 peices 1 of which is 1/4 of the total length of the board. the smaller peice is then screwed to the frame and the light attached to it, the remaining peice is then attached using 2 hinges at the back and 2 clips on the front to secure it.

hope this helps
