New Thermometer

I got a digital thermometer from feeder's supply. I put the probe under the reptile bark on the hot side. It is reading 115 degrees! :eek1:
I have a red light over the cage on the hot side. How do I get the aquarium to cool down? Should I turn the light off? And if so, can he do ok without it?
I knew it was hot on that side, but had no idea it was that hot. I was using one of those thermometers that stick on the side. Big mistake!

Ok, I moved the probe from the bottom of the aquarium to the top of the substrate and the temp is going down. Thank god, I thought I was gonna cook the little guy. I have about an inch of reptile bark in the cage. Its down to 96 and still going.

make sure the thermometer is not right against the heating pad/aquarium glass. this is one of the reasons we are reccomended to use substrate, and heating pads rather than the heat rocks.
I doubt youre cooking him, but observe him: if he hangs out in the coldest corner of the tank most of the time, it may be nessissarry to turn down the heat some.

The thermometer has stopped at 96.5. If I turn the light on, it starts to really jump up. Is it ok to keep the light off? I have a UTH, and it dosen't have any controls. How can I get it cooler on that side? Any suggestions are very much welcome.

air??????

Suzanne have you got your UTH on the inside or outside of your viv? If you have it on the outside have you left a space between it and the glass for air ? I had a similar problem but got it solved by leaving a space for air and inside the viv i put a polystyrene tile over the area of the UTH then the substrate .A mat stat would help your problem and be safer too.

HUH???!?!?!?

You should have a space UNDER the UTH for air...but not between the UTH and the GLASS of the tank...is nothing else attach the UTH to a seperate piece of glass or tile and place it in direct contact with your tank...

I cannot imagine a UTH that is not in contact with the tank in one way or another would produce enough heat to properly heat the enclosure...

Otherwise your advice seems very good...
