For those who feed their snakes two times a week....

What sort of routine do you follow? I'm sorta thinking about feeding my snake two times a week now. I fed him Monday and was thinking about feeding him again today.

I assume you are talking about feeding a hatchling, correct? You should only feed an adult (one that is eating adult mice) once a week.

I feed my hatchlings every 5-7 days. In past years I've fed as often as every 4 days at times, but I've since decided that one extra day is beneficial. For some snakes, a 4 day schedule is a bit too much. But just stretching it to every 5 days, you give them enough time to digest properly, for most hatchlings that is.

My own personal suggestion is not to feed more often than every 5 days...
A snake needs time to digest and empty it's stomach contents before being fed again...needs to "cycle"...if this isn't allowed it could cause problems in the future.

I have fed VERY small hatchlings that eat VERY small meals every 4 days...but not for very long...and not on a regular basis.

I feed all my snakes once a week...if your snake isn't getting enough food...you are better off feeding it larger meals than feeding it more often...

I was just going to add... you are pretty much okay to feed again as long as the snake has defecated. If it hasn't gone to the bathroom yet, you want to wait it out a day or so, so you don't tempt a regurgitation or something similar.

Hatchling every 5 days on pinkies or fuzzie.
Yearling on small mice every 7 days.
sub-adult on medium mice every 7-10 days depending on the snake.
Adult every 10-14 days for a large mouse or chick (i feed them alternate), except a female who's gravid as she need a medium mouse every 7 days to help the female maintain weight and to help with good eggs.

Thats my routine (although i'm not breeding yet), and all my feeding is fully documented.

I agree with the other. Don't overfeed your snake. Once a week is absolutely sufficient. I heard from people that they make 2-3 week breaks in feeding their snakes. In the wild they might only eat every 3 to 4 weeks.

i was trying out feeding every 4 days, and just had one of my little dears regurgitate their meal last night... his last meal was a little larger than most, so i'm assuming this is natures way of telling me i was wrong. I think ill start them on a 5 day scedule, or maybe 6.

These are frequencies that I recommend also.

As soon as my hatchlings go to fuzzies, I go to every 7 days. They are all on the same feeding schedule now. Much easier :)

I have been feeding my 20in baby corn twice a week every three days. It sounds like this is to often. Hes always uses the bathroom afterwards. And he seems to know when the three days comes up because he gets more active like hes searching for food.

Do you never handle your snake then? I usually wait at least 2 days before handling mine after feeding. Every three days is entering the realm of power feeding, which most people cosider unhealthy. I would change to at least every 5 days.

Overfeeding

I got a question that coincides with this topic...
How can one tell if they are overfeeding their snake... I have had my corn for about 4 months and am feeding him small fuzzies every 7 days... and he looks like he is getting fat.... Good news is that he just shedded yesterday
I will try to get a pic up which may help

i feed my snake every other week so she cleans out everything and she doesnt seem to mind she knows the scedual they get use to it

I thought over-fed corns will actually stop eating for a while to lose some of the weight. I'm not sure of this though. I've never had to deal with a corn that is overfed, but I do have a large boy that breeds anually. I've been wondering lately if I need to let him skip a few meals......

Eh, you should be careful about this. That is really more of a maintaining diet than a growing one. You really should be feeding once a week.

'Weeks' is a human concept (snakes don't think in terms of weeks.) I'd suggest thinking in terms of feeding every 4 or 5 days or every 7 days or whatever. I agree Sherry's snake should probably be eating more often than once every 14 days. My hatchling (16 inch approx.) eats a small fuzzy about every 5 days now, and he's hungry by then.

If anybody cares to comment on whether this is the right size prey for him, I'll include a couple of photos.

That looks like a good size larry. When the lump is no longer terribly large on one fuzzy, try 2 per feeding and do that for a while before moving up to hoppers.

Thanks. Luckily fuzzies come in many sizes here, so I will be able to move up to medium fuzzies, large fuzzies, x-large fuzzies, small hoppers, etc.
