Well, I finally figured out why my snake has been acting weird. He was shedding, but when I look at him, I can tell its gonna be a bad one. What can I do to help him?

How can you tell it's going to be a bad shed? Is it flaking off in pieces?

Yes. It's like little pieces.

When did he start to shed? Did he start today?

What I do with these types of sheds are to get a moist paper towel and let the snake slide thru it while you are holding it. 9 times out of 10 this works great. I do it all the time with my problem shedder.

Bad Shed..bath..

A 5 minute warm bath always helps our two snakes.. I don't think trying to pull the old skin is ever recommended.

Did your snake skuff up his/her skin recently? Sometimes Mimi tries to get out and she is roughed up from her scales....feels like a bad shed but it corrects itself when she does shed again.

Good luck!

Kerri

I never implied to pull off the skin.

If you wet the paper towel enough, it loosens the skin enough so when the snake slides thru the paper towels, it gently comes off. If that didn't work, then you can try the bath. I know my snakes don't like being put in a bowel of water.

:eek1:

he didn't either. he just pooped lol but it moisten his skin. I'im gonna try paper towels again and let him rest till his next feeding.

He's Bleeding!

I did the paper towel thing again, and he was working to get it off and it did come off. I put him in his cage to rest for a couple days till feeding. I look at his dead skin and I see a small scale. Then I looked at the paper towels and I saw blood. I'm really freaking out. Is this normal?

How is he now????

Could you provide him with a moist hide in his viv? Perhaps something as simple as crumpled damp papertowels in a ½ litre icecream container with a hole cut in the lid will be enough for now. If he's lost a scale or 2, it's not great but not the end of the world. If you havea broad spectrum antifungal or antiseptic cream, dab a miniscule amount on the area to ward off any bugs that could take hold. Keep us posted on how he's doing...

If his situation doesn't improve over the coming months, you might have to consider that he could have an inability to lubricate his skin for a shed properly but that's not something to generally worry about now. I've had the occasional 3 piece shed in the past but I have moist rolling tubs in all my vivs so 99% of the time I get 1 piece sheds. Good luck.

my albino snow...

norbert had difficulty shedding for the past six months, last night was his first good shed without my assistance. when these problems started arising i used a wet paper towel followed by a dry one and that worked very well, but my breeder suggested that i put wet moss in a small container and place the snake inside over night. i did this a few times and it worked wonderfully and it was a lot less stressful on my snake. moss can be a pain in the butt to handle because it can be a bit prickly, but my snakes definitely benefit from it. i didn't read all the posts previous to your last one so i'm not sure if this suggestion was already made. good luck with everything and i'm sure you snake will be just fine.
