Hey guys, i have a corn snake i got as a baby the day before xmas eve of 04'. He had his first shedd in jan 05 and that went smoothly, in the meantime sice then, he has tried to shedd i think 2 times, each time, his skin only comes off around his head, he is very white with the fluid or w/e on the inside of his skin. any ways i could help him shedd it off?

also, he is very seductive, he is always under the paper substrate of his cage and i am not sure if he is getting enuf water, and if i try to take him out of it, he just trys to bite my finger off :(

well, i hope to find out what is the problem, here are the cage specs:

humidity, 40-50%

temp on warm side, 80 half way up

temp on cool side, a steady 74

it has a heat lamp for daytime use and a uth for nighttime

he has 2 hiding spots, along with a nice water dish

the tank is a custom made 57 gallon

well my corn hasent shed yet but i have read that the humidity needs to be 70% or higher but im not 100% sure on that

What is the surface temp in the heated center of the warm end? The air temp in the middle of the tank is of little use.

Lamps overdry the air (which leads to poor sheds) and are simply unnecessary for cornsnakes. I'd recommend just using the UTH 24-7.

If the entire skin doesn't come off during a shed, you've got a problem. In order to maintain a health animal, the old skin needs to be removed. Providing a moist hide or rubbing the snake down with a damp towel will assist in removing old sheds, JUST DON'T PEEL IT OFF! Use the search function for more details on these methods.

The snake needs more moisture. You can increase the humidity by using a spray bottle and misting the substrate or you can also give him a bath once a week. I have the same problem all I do is spray some water with a spray bottle to increase to humidity for a day or two before they shed and I also spray my corn down with the spray bottle. Remember you do not want the substrate to be wet just a little moist for a day to two. I also use aspen as a substrate. The set up looks good to me, just maybe a little to big for a 04 baby but he will grow into it. If he has any old shed on him you will need to remove it. I hope this helps.

i would use the spray bottle to mist the cage at least every other day and if you continue to have this problem try giving him a warm bath for about 15 min. make sure he has something in his cage that is a little rough so when he does shed he has something he can rub up against to help him pull the old skin off.

as soon as i saw my corn getting white and wrinkly i misted him lightly and an hour later he was all done, she may have shed just as easily if i hadn't i have misted i have only had her for a week. good luck
