Europe in Spring

After 32 hours in coach, a half-dozen passport stamps, some fantastic cuisine and herping in some ancient ruins dating from the 7th century B.C., I have returned home to the comfort of my own bed!

For those of you that have never visited Central or Eastern Europe, I highly recommend it. (Especially if you get to go free-o-charge as a guest of the American taxpayers.....Thanks you guys! ;) )

I was in Romania preparing for a humanitarian assistance mission that we will be involved with this summer. We will be working to improve local schools and complete several major community improvement projects along the Black Sea coast. The people in this particular area are very poor. It was like stepping back in time to the beginning of the 20th century. They still have no sewage systems, fresh water and horse-drawn carts are still quite common. Needless to say, I was humbled by the experience and I am really looking forward to returning in July. Back to the story at hand.......

Some of the trip's biggest highlights:
1. We stayed on the Black Sea coast. The hotel was right on the beach and the sunrises were simply spectacular.

2. I got to stand at the mouth of the Danube River and watch water flow by that had originated deep within the Black Forest and traversed nine countries and nearly 1800 miles of Europe.

3. We were forced to return through Zurich, Switzerland and had to end up staying overnight. (BTW the Swiss make some darn good chocolate!)

4. Oh yeah, I almost forgot finding the snake; certainly the highlight of my week.

Here are a few of my select shots from the NATO member and former Eastern Bloc nation that gave us Transylvania and Vlad the Impaler (the inspiration behind Bram Stoker's Dracula).

Offshore accounts, Army knives, Heidi, chocolate, the Matterhorn, and of course Ricola! It was a pricey overnight stop but worth every Schweizerfranken.

The Black Sea coast was originally settled by the Greeks and the Romans more than eight centuries before the birth of Christ. The ruins made for primo herp shelter. I found this guy soaking up the spring sun and tailed him before he escaped into the ancient stone walls.

I found these on my memory stick when I was downloading photos. A few of my favorite pics from Prague, Czech Republic where I was last spring as part of an Embassy mission. The beer was beyond words.

Thanks Chris. This is the kind of project that reminds me why I got into this line of work.

Cindy, unfortunately my collection of European field guides is rather anemic. I've found a couple of possibilities but nothing definitive. We have a herp meeting this weekend and I plan on showing the pics to a few of the local experts.

Sounds like a great trip CAV! I did a bit of research and I *think* that the snake you found is called a 'Dice Snake' Natrix tessellata (http://www.club100.net/species/N_tessellata/N_tessellata.html)

I think from what I read they can be found in Switzerland, Greece, and Italy.

Most excellent pics Gary. I'd thank you for sharing, but right now I'm too jealous... :grin01: Glad to see that the herping is still great no matter where you are :)

D-

I ordered a couple of European field guides but I am still awaiting their arrival. Apparently, there isn't a big demand for them on Amazon...the lead time was 3-5 weeks.
