new guy odd bite

Hi everybody! A week ago we got this new Rev. Okeetee and he is great, the calmest snakey I have. Last night my son was holding him and as usual he was calm then as he moved up around his neck he started pushing his nose against it. Then all of a sudden he bite him! I mean he was really going at it!! Blood was dripping down his neck! So I carefully but quickly grabbed him and he just curled up in my hands. Do you think he felt his pulse and thats why he bit? I was wondering cause if thats the case then I won't let them do that any more! I did had my son hold him again so he wouldn't be afraid next time.

Anyway what do you think?

Thanks

Colleen:)

I would say that is a very very weird case. I have never had that experience before.
Was there a particular smell that your son had that drew it's attention to it? Maybe he held a mouse before and scrached his neck thus leading to his neck smell like a mouse and the snake attacked it because it thought that it was a really big mouse?

Or another thing is that maybe he touched it in a certain way that made it become so intense and afraid and had to bite?

I am not too sure what happened there.

But try letting your son hold the snake again and hope that it doesn't bite anymore. Hope that your son wouldn't be afraid of snakes when he grows up....don't want to lose a future herper!

Sorry for not being able to help very much...

I had one of my snakes do a similar thing to me. She gave my arm a good "feeding bite" as opposed to a "self-defense bite" once. I never figured out what prompted it, but she hasn't done it again. Of course now I check to make sure none of my snakes start rubbing their nose up against me!

Biting snake~~~~~~~:~

I think that Elaphe_Mo has an excellent point. I have had Cornelius try to take a bite out of my hand once, it was almost funny, like he couldn't figure out how to get his mouth around my hand. But it was clear it was a feed bite attempt and not an aggessive attack bite. ~~~~~~~:~ Sam

Yes that is exactly what he did! It was really slow and nonaggresive like I've seen me timid feeder open wide and start to swallow! Guess he thought this was one BIG mouse!! :D We don't have any mice, we do have pet rats. Cullen had just gotten out of the tub so I don't think he smelled like anything but bubblegum scented bubble bath. Just so strange, after I grabbed him he just curled up in my hands calm as could be!

Well lesson learned if he, or any of the others starts rubbing thier nose like that, it's time to move them!! Or feed'em!

Thanks all

Colleen

You told us that your son hold the snake again after he was bitten! how is he know?? i mean, is he afraid now or is he still liking corns??
Just curious!

ps, just posted this message on the wrong thread!
now i've fixed the error :D

He still loves them!

He was a little shaken by the blood, but he's fine now. There was no real mark just tiny pin pricks. :) Thanks for asking!

As I'm writing this he's begging to get them out and put them in the tub!LOL

Colleen

Oh I did have Cullen hold him for a few minutes right after the bite. I know from many falls off of horses that the longer you wait to get back on the harder and scarier it is! He says the snake must have wanted some bubblegum since that's what he smelled like!LOL:D
