Got my Lonestar Field Guide: Snakes of Florida

Got my book today in the mail. Kudos to whomever I bought it from on Amazon. It came from Rochester and got here in a matter of 3 days. Surprising.

Anyway, nothing like paying $5.84 for a $22.95 book. Gotta love Amazon.com's marketplace.

I didn't realize how big this book is. Looks like I'll be doin' some reading later tonight.

Thanks for the info again, Cav. Btw, there's no drawing on the cover, it's a picture of a Scarlet Kingsnake. :shrugs:

Wow that was fast!
I ordered my guides from amazon too, but I got free shipping. They said it will get here by July 7th. We'll see

Better recheck that....

If you have the second edition, it is in fact a painting of a scarlet king, not a photo. I've seen the original painting.

If anyone has the newest edition of Snakes of North America, he did the Okeetee painting on the cover. I have the full-sized print framed and hanging in my house. Ed is without a doubt one of the finest wildlife artists I've seen.

Just testing you. Looked like a photo in the dark, lol.

So you're friends with Ed, eh?

Yep, Ed is a great friend. We are both big Alterna fanatics and he is an extremely knowledgeable field herper. I should see if he'd like to offer some of those Okeetee prints for sale on here.

I thought I had a pic of him from our Trans-Pecos trip but this was the only one I could find; not very useful I know.

An interesting aspect of this book is that it says that hunting snakes is illegal in national and state parks, but it is legal to hunt snakes in the Apalachicola, Osecola, and Ocala National Parks. However, no animals collected there may be sold.

My favorite is the one about road hunting at night. It's OK unless you're using a gun :twoguns:

Or a light. And it's doubly illegal if you use a light attached to a gun.

"It is legal to collect snakes from Florida's roads. But it is illegal to use a light to do so at night while posessing a gun."

So I guess you can use a light, as long as you're not using a gun. Wonder if that means you're allowed to use a gun if you don't have a light?

Guess so lol, don't you love hard to read rules you can interpeet most of the rules how you want, even the FWC doesn't have a clue.

You got to remember that since there is no regulated hunting season for them, most states include reptiles as non-game species. As you are aware "spotlighting" is an illegal hunting practice in just about every state. They aren't making those regulations specifically for reptiles.

Cav i was thinking along the same lines. You get pulled over in possesion of a spotlight, and a gun no way are you going to convince an FWC officer you werent out shining deer. I am thinking even if you where just driving down the road spotlighting anything out of the window of your vechicle your asking for trouble. Even if you not in possesion of a firearm. Even then an officer wouldnt be too happy once you got to that point.

Try this link for the state of Florida Regs its PDF.

You're missing the point.

Spotlighting while hunting game is still illegal, regardless of whether your get harassed while shining for reptiles. :)

Unless the legal verbage exempts a specific animal by name, it is included automatically. I got both "permitted" and "questioned" doing the same thing in Texas.
