Keeping Frozen

How long will mice keep in a freezer? I keep mine in the basement in the freezer thats lid is on top, whatever those are called. Anyone have some estimates?

Deep Freeze is what those chest type freezers with the lid on top are called. Normally they are kept colder than the regular freezer you have in your house--0 F as opposed to 28-30 F.

One of the reasons that a separate "deep freeze" freezer stores food longer is because it isn't being opened several times a day by people looking for something to snack on. They are also usually kept at a colder temperature. They can be turned down farther than an attached freezer because it doesn't result in the food in the fridge part freezing as consequence.

Just to clarify, the freezer you are referring to is called a "Chest Freezer". It is a name that comes from the original freezers that were the shape of a chest as most still are today. (and no, I am not going to look up a date)

Deep freeze is a term given to (as mentioned before) a much lower (deeper) temperature then a domestic refrigerator.

Now, to answer the question, mice can safely be kept in a chest freezer for 6 months (assuming normal operation of the freezer). Some people will argue this info and have/will keep mice longer in a freezer, they will start to deteriorate to some degree. Any feeders can have a prolonged "freeze life" if they are vacuum sealed. To avoid any misconceptions, vacuum seal means removal of all air, thus removing all oxygen that will sustain bacterial growth.

I have about 10 snakes eating adult sized mice and recently bought a 200 count of the right sized mice for them. The males only get fed once a fortnight but the females get fed once a week so I estimate it should last me around 6 months...the thing is, I'm planning a 3 week cooldown and a 2 month brumation starting in about 2 months, so I will have mice in the freezer all through the winter and will probably only get through them by next february or march. I don't have them vacuum sealed or anything as freezerburn affects foods texture, flavour and palatability rather than it's nutritional content ---and in my experience, the plastic bagged lots of 50 that I have them packed in don't get very freezerburnt at all.
