I'm gonna guess it's the same as everywhere else. Aspen.

colinmcc is that way (somewhere) and seems to know what is available, I would at least try to PM him your question or hope he replies here.
(just a thought) Other than that I can't help at all.

I eventually managed to find a place selling the big sacks of aspen just outside Edinburgh. They normally use it as bedding for the birds they sell but are quite happy selling me sacks of it.

Costs about 6 times what you'd pay for it in the USA but still cheaper than Repti-bark.

Just try phoning round as many pet shops and suppliers near you as you can and see if you get lucky.

Most places will do beech chips though, which are fine enough as reptile substrate.

Repti-bark is obviously an option as well (I used it for the best part of 15 years) but it's very damp, prone to bugs (not harmful to the snakes and can be got rid of by freezing before use) but having switched to aspen, I'm sticking with it.

i don't if it will help a lot but in france no petshop knows about aspen so i was starting to give it up, but i accidentally saw a bag of what they use for birds litter and i'm sure it's pretty the same, it's just called something like "chipsy" instead of aspen bedding. as americans are much more advanced in herpetology than in europe, i believe it's why we cannot find a lot a reptile's material..; people here are much more intolerant too... since i have my sanke i m a kind of weirdo for some of my "friends" and nobody yet wanted to try and touch it but i don't care i just hope dusty mentalities are going to improuve ...

you can try looking for a subestrage called Eco-earth or bead a beast. it is shaved coconut husk, i use it and it works well. you could also try to find yesterdays news, but i do not know if they sell any of those over in england.
