Hi-

I know the best way to sex a snake is to probe it but I would still like your oppinions on these two snakes anyway. I found out that the dark one, whom I bought as a corn, is truely a rat snake instead. Anyway, I wanted to start breeding down the road and wanted to know what sex the amel was anyway. I keep looking at the tail and just can't guage with my limited experience so far. So, tell me what you think? Thanks

Laura

I hope your right. I'm not breeding the rat, obviously, but the corn I wanted to be female, so I'm hoping.

From here the rat looks female, but I'm not good enough to tell male/female from a side shot (sometimes a belly-full of poop makes even my male look female), so you have a pic of the underside of the amel, it might be more helpful.:)

Sorry Laura, but that snake's too young to identify gender by tail shape. My hesitant guess is: female. One more thing-- maybe it's my imagination, but does that snake have some discolored belly scales near the top of that pic? Sometimes that can be an indicator of a substrate or humidity problem.

Think its just the lighting Roy, tho I do see where you mean. Whats min age for tail sexing a corn?

The snake isn't dark on the outside but I see dark 'stuff' on the inside. I figured this is just waste that hasn't passed yet??? It moves down and then dissappears after awhile. I've only had the snake for a week or so. She/he is kept on aspen.

Yeah, I wasn't sure what I was seeing. I've seen some nasty belly-scale discoloring in snakes that have been kept in squalid conditions at pet stores. I'm glad that it was my imagination. :)

There really is no minimum age for tail-shape sexing, but I'd say that the accuracy increases significantly after they hit yearling age. Of course, this method is never absolutely conclusive, and some corns' tails may be somewhat ambiguously shaped for their entire lives.
