Hi there to all you folks around the world, i'm new to all this snake business & only here because my daughter wanted a snake & now i'm bitten (not literally) by the bug. I've made a small viv for the 'reverse okeetee' hatchling when it arrives & have it set up & tweeking with the temp etc so as it's perfect for the new arrival, so all advice welcomed. At the moment the temp gauge at the top of the viv reads between 65-76f depending on whether the 25w light is on or not. Temp on the floor above the heat mat is around 92f but i'm trying to bring this down by placing paper towels between the mat and glass. Humidity is around 66..

p.s. one other thing, could a hatchling escape through the gap between the glass sliding doors?

What do you mean, "not literally"? If you haven't been bitten then you haven't had snakes long enough or don't have enough of them.

Snakes can squeeze through some improbably small gaps. A hatchling might make it through the space between the glass. Better safe than sorry. Many things can be used to fill that gap. It doesn't even have to be permanent. Options include strips of styrofoam, weather stripping, pliable tubing etc. Think about what you have available that could fill the bill and try it.

Yes they are quite crafty about gettin through the smallest gaps.
That's a neat viv, I like it! A lot of people adapt a lamp dimmer to lower the temps of the heat pad

Thanks for the reply guys, good tips too, i'll try a dimmer on the heat mat & see what i can come up with to seal between the sliding doors. It's nice to be part of this community.... :cheers:

Hi brian.You can get a brush strip to stick to the door from B&Q for only a couple of quid.It will stop the hatchling escaping and help keep humdity up when you need it.

Hi Brian welcome to the forum. Nice to see another "norn iron" person here. Your viv looks lovely, do you have a thermometer down low in your viv?

I do a bit of gardening, sowing seeds etc so at the moment i have a small soil thermometer lying above the heat mat reading just over 90. :flames: Yeh bit hot but i'm working on it...
Good to talk to others from 'norn iron'...Folks here will be saying 'What' :shrugs:
