deformed runts and non feeders

hey guys, I went to a show yesterday and picked up 3 snakes for $5 bucks. I now have 2 regular corn snakes that look and move very healthy they are only 3 weeks old, the third is a snow corn with a deformed spine, it sticks up in 2 spaces, but he seems to move ok. I got them for 5 bucks because they are all non eaters. now I read the posts on non eaters from before and I'll try everything, my question is why would they label them as non eaters after just 3 weeks?
ok about the snow corn, he is kinda small, is it possible if I get him eating he will survive and perhaps the defect in his spine will become less pronounced when he gets older? today will be the first time I try feeding frozen pinkys, wish me luck

hey ive read by a few other guys about senting it with lizard sent or (this is sick) cutting the head off a pinky and if that dosent work cut the head in half :S i hope this will help

Dan

I bet my geckos are going to be real happy that I'm rubbing a dead mouse on them :D I actually read the same thing, since I bought them only yesterday I have no idea how hard it will be to get them to eat, I think the breeders were just impatient, they are only 3 weeks old.

yup

Breeders just don't have time to get them started always!

I would leave them alone for a few days and then try a pinkie. :) But sounds like you are on a good track.

The snow with the kinked spine will be fine if he eats. Some make it, some don't...but many people have kinked spine snakes for pets and they are very capable of living long heathly lives!

:)

ok so the 3 snakes are in a tubaware container together now. I will wait till tomorrow then seperate them, once I get them eating I'll try to sell them, the snow with the kinked back I'll be keeping if it survives, I'll let you guys know what happens

Hey Silentneko,
Why are you going to sell them when you get feeding??? Is that why you bought them? So maybe you can make more money?
Jimmy C.

the money isn't important, I just bought them because they were cheap and the breeder was just going to let them die. I already have way to many pets. I got all 3 for 5 bucks

I hope you aren't planning on misrepresenting these snakes to make a few bucks.

Make sure you let the buyer know these were breeder "unwanteds".

My boyfriend has a Blue Beauty with a kinked spine and it has got a little straighter in the last year (she's 18 months old now). It'll never be completely straight but she eats OK and is active. Hopefully you'll find the same with your kinked guy, but don't expect a quick fix.

Cheers
Kel

why buy them just to sell them again after all the hard work you will put in trying to get them 2 feed please dont sell them keep them and enjoy them as they grow up!:(

well

it doesn't matter what he wants to do because if he ends up selling them he won't be making a profit, if he wants one or not. No matter how cheap he bought them for.

Problem feeders probably mean pinkies wasted after being not eaten, lots of pinkie heads which means wasted bodies, heating for all three snakes, caging even temp for all three, etc.

Even if its just rubbermaids, three will still cost you more than you bought them for, as will their first meals not to mention their second, thrid, fourth etc.

But if you purchased them so they wouldn't die, and want to get them eating I would be selling them for exactly what you paid. Because thats exactly why you are claiming to sell them so you wouldnt care about a profit hopefully. And since they are non feeders they will be considerablly smaller depending on how long they refuse food for, which will also reflect on any price you put on them. I would keep them for good myself. Especially the kinked one.

I didn't buy them to make a profit, I just wanted to see if I could get them eating so they wouldn't die, the snakes are only 3 weeks old and actually quite large for snakes that never ate.

GOOD NEWS!! both regular corns ate a pinky last night. I defrosted them in hot water and brained them, which was the single most disgusting moment of my life. I put them in there little plastic containers with the pinkys and put them in a cabinet. morning came and I've got 2 very fat little snakes. unfortunately the little snow with the bad back still hasn't eaten, I'll try again with just a head. I will be keeping the snow if it survives, but I have no need for the other 2 so I'll sell them just to get rid of them. I already have several garter snakes. one that has turned out to be a new breed and will be mated to give albinos soon. an albino garter goes from $100-300 depending on sex and size so thats where I'll make my money, as for the corns I just wanted to save them from death.

hehehe

I really am not trying to be rude, and I wish you the best of luck in all your endevours but please please please be aware that snake breeding is almsot impossible to make money if you are doing it properly.

Put it this way, Rich Z who owns this site, and probably thousands of cornsnakes, and who breeds every year for the past how many years? More than 15 I believe...anyways he posted awhile ago and he JUST recently was able to quit his day job! That is how many snakes it takes, and how many years it takes to make an actual profit. Rmember tank costs, food costs and heating costs must all be factored in. Especially vet visits.

Just keep that in mind as many new herpers are dying to breed for the money, but if you are responsible, and do things properly with proper equiptment and feeding etc, its hard to make a dime.

bmm :) :)

Give him a break, guys. He already said he isn't trying to make a profit off of these snakes. He doesn't want or need two more normal corns, but he's trying to save them from dying. It sounds like he's doing a pretty good job of it, too. What does it matter if he keeps them or sells them to somebody else as a pet? And it sounds perfectly fair to me if he raises the price a little bit from what he paid. After all, when he sells them, they will be *feeding* baby corns, which always sell for a bit more than non-feeders or hatchlings that haven't had the opportunity to eat yet.

Just my opinion on the issue.

Glad you got the 2 normals to eat. Good luck with the snow.

Really though, it's no one elses business if he makes a profit or not. Is not a persons time invested worth a little something?

Just my 2 cents :D

thanks kate, I am just trying to save them, I really don't have much interest in keeping and breeding them, I will keep them for a few more months just to make sure they grow up a bit before I sell or trade them off. as far as making money on the garters, well I'm not going to quite my job but I will definately be looking to make some cash on the side, the food I get for next to nothing because they eat fish, the cages I already have and the babies stay in the tubaware. and heat is cheap because we use solar panels on my patio. plus I'm not breeding just garters I'll be breeding giant checkered garters, its a new breed, my female is now almost 4 1/2 feet long and still growing, she eats about 40-50 gold fish a week, shes as fat around as a small python. mix that with an albino and I have babies worth $120-150 each, plus the breed 2-3 times a year, I actually have customers lined up waiting for the first batch already, but we will see what happens. I'll let you guys know if the snow eats.

Him I break from what? Nothing in my posts was rude, offensive, or out of line. I was actually trying to be quite friendly, and I don't find anything wrong with what he is doing. I was under the impression we were having a adult discussion, which I was enjoying.

on the garter topic

Since you have two garter snakes, one being albino. Won't their offspring just be hets and not actual albinos? I am not good with genetics and I am curious. Maybe garters are different, but with corns a normal mating with an albino doesnt produce albinos, it produces hets.

Any idea with yours?

just curious
