How can i tell if my snake is about to shed

I just brought a corn snake and its about 3months old now, i read that they shed every 3-4 weeks when young. is there a way i can tell by looking at the snake if he is soon to shed?

thanks

Your snakes eyes will become cloudy and it's colors will become dull right before it sheds. Commonly called "in the blue" this will clear up before the actual shed. It is harder if you have an amel or snow (or similarly colored corn) to see the dulling of the eyes. If you do a search you should find lots of information (and there is a pic in this thread that shows one of my girls in the blue).

Yep, look for the bluish milky eyes, dead give away. 2 of my snakes just did that just this week, yearling corn and my 4 month old Bull.

I'm gonna start hounding people now that the FAQ is 95% completed....

Q: I think my snake might be starting to shed, but I'm not sure. How do I tell?
A: First, your snake will begin to appear lackluster and dull. The colors will start to fade and on most snakes they will have a waxy looking tint to them. Their belly checkers (provided they're black) will look milky and their eyes will blue. If their eyes are blue, that is called 'blue phase'. After the blue phase, their eyes and skin will clear up and they will shed within 3-7 days, or thereabouts.

You know, I think as soon as a new user submits their registration they should be redirected to the FAQ forum so they at least realize it's there. Most people just post before even looking for the FAQ or searching. Or maybe the FAQ could be put above the New Members Forum. :shrugs:

Dunno. I know Fauna has a page like that, but that's all up to Rich. I'll just keep sending people links to the FAQ. Hopefully when it's 100% finalized it will actually be used.

Personally, I think Zach has the right idea. Many people will read the FAQ page, but there are also many who will just post their question without even reading anything. Case in point, how many times do the same questions get asked over and over again? If the poster would just READ some of the posts before asking, the questions would be answered.

No one's had a go at you, your question has been answered, in full, with a link to photographs! What more could you want?!

Maybe someone should move the FAQ's to the top of the page, where new people can find them easier. I know that I didn't even know they existed until 2 or 3 people gave me the standard "READ THE FAQ'S YOU FRIGGEN RETARD" reply.

I think maybe because we diverged about how nobody reads the FAQs that they were thinking we were flaming them.

xcite47, while it would have been helpful to read the FAQ I don't believe it is particularly aimed at you, more a problem in general. We seem to answer the same 20 questions time after time.

Uh, they are. There are 3 FAQ's that are done. Husbandry/Basic Care, Health Issues/Feeding Problems, and Genetics/Morphs. They are all tacked at the top of the page on their respective forums. Not much else you can do.

Joe's FAQs are great, and it's too bad they're not being fully utilized. But another thing I don't understand is why some posters are so reluctant to use the search functions. Initially, the only reason I registered on this site was to gain access to those functions. Posting, and waiting around for replies didn't seem like a very efficient research method when there were dozens, sometimes hundreds of answers to my questions already available a few clicks away. :shrugs:

But does a brand new person who's never visited this site know that?

On the main page, the only FAQ spot is all the way to the bottom. I'm just saying that maybe that should be moved to the top. I know you've posted some great stuff, but I posted here for a week before I even seen it.

And it would be obvious if everyone else did too, because you wouldn't see near as many first time posts about the same stuff.

I don't know. I'm not trying to be a dick here, but if the FAQ'S were so obvious, you'd think somone would read them BEFORE posting the same questions over and over.
