Need to rant about a local pet store chain

So I see this is a good place to rant. Sorry, might get kinda long. Here's my story:

I went to Petland today to pick up a wood log or something to climb for Nagini. Petland is a large pet shop in Canada, dont know if they have it in the US. So just for kicks, I went over to where they keep the snakes. First off, when I walk over I see a fairly large tank with 2 pythons in it, dont know what kind but they were big!! Maybe 4 feet long and maybe about as wide as a Red Bull can, just alittle more snake shapped. So I see an employee, maybe 15-16 years old hitting one of the pythons into a corner with one of those metal hook things. It looked like he was trying to take out a log from the tank. Anyway, this snake was getting pissed!!!!! And with good intention, that kid kept bopping it in the nose trying to get it away from the opening, then he would squeeze it against the glass with the hook and try to take the wood.

Now when I say this snake was pissed, he was PISSED!!! I could feel my own adrenaline kicking in and this kid wasnt that tall, his face was about face level of the python and the python was striking at anything that moved, the hook, the lightbulb hanging in the tank, and the kids hand. He was wearing what looked like a hawk handling glove (understand?).

So he finally gets the wood out and at this point the one python joined the other and climed up ontop of the tube lighting above the tank. SO now the kid starts prodding the snake again with the hook trying to pull it down from around the light and Im sure he was pulling really hard cause i could see the snake stretching and thinnig around the mid section. So to make a long story short she gets both out with a lot more prodding and pulling and angry snake striking. And then he comes out and says they are always like that and even more because they are shedding. I dont know anything about pythons but Im sure there could have been a better nicer way of doing it. Luckly he also said that someone bought them, $1000 Canadian, for the pair! I hope this person gives them a good home.

So now if you arent bored yet, I asked about what kind of corns they had, so he pulls out the tank. I had seen an anery baithing in on of 2 water bowls that had hardly any water in it. And these bowls were small, like the size that I hade for Nagini when I first got her, not very shallow. And i saw that the other water dish was on top of A LOT of wet aspen! As if someone tried to fill it up and spilled have a bottle of water trying to do it and was to lazy to do it.

There was 1 small hide in the tank too about the size that a yearling would use, oh the tank was about 20 gal. I could see 1 snake in the hide but it was pressed against the opening as if there were more in it. So he picks up the hide and I kid you not it was full of corns, at least 7 here trying to hide in it!! 7!!! I thought that was bad that they would have 7 corns in such a small tank, but then he starts digging in the aspen and there are MORE!!!! A LOT MORE!!!! I roughly counted about 18 corns!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was outraged!!! YOu could see lots of poop in the aspen, lots of wet spots from water?? I hope... they were all really really small and didnt look healthy! Skinny in parts, bloated in others, plus he was almost throwwing them around grabbing them by the tails to show me and they were all almost striking at him. The manager had come over to see if i needed any help with, and I quote, "those snakes. I think they are disgusting, thats why I let him get them." Him, being the pubesant teenager 'helping me'. I tol the manager that this was disgusting.

I bought my log and left, and I wouldnt have bought it at all, but I had already been to the other stores in the area and even accross town and this was the best one I had found.

I just really needed to get that off my chest, sorry for it being so long. It was just so disgusting and I was angry taht they could even get away with that.

US has Petland too, and they are just as bad here as in Canada. The last time I went to one, they had snakes with mites, rats that had water bowls (big no-no) instead of water bottles, and ton of other gross things. But on the plus side, because of their negligence and stupidity, I got to female pet rats that just so happened to be pregnant, so got a few months worth of free food for my snakes :grin01: .

Corns and ball pythons cost a chain store like that @ 3 dollars or so a piece, maybe less...So when someone buys them for a thousand (even canadian ;*) ) dollars well, you can see why they are multimillion dollar corporations...

IMHO if you need ANYTHING for just about ANY pet, someone here, be it a member or a paid advertiser, can supply it or point you in the direction of someone you'll feel good about buying from :*)

I dont think they were Ball Pythons, I think I remember seeing something like whit lip pythons on the glass. But, I see where you are soming from.

I thought Petland didn't sell snakes. Ours don't and I've been told MANY times that it is against Petland's company policy. Maybe Petland has different policies depending on where they are located? Who knows?

If it was a pair of white lips it would explain the agression. White lips are NOT the friendliest python in the world and like to kill you when you handle them. First hand experience allows me to state that for a FACT. Been around more than 6-7 whitelips 4 days a week is NOT easy lol. But anyway, i think that petstore needs to go to hell and get more knowledgable people to care for their animals.

It was appalling!! Usually at this time of year they have usually one corn left that didn't sell during the summer, but to have SO many all crammed in there!

PetLand is more of a franchise operation than a chain store. We had one here for while, but the owner disassociated himself, and renamed his store. Unlike the 'big boys' PetSmart, PetCo, etc., each PetLand is probably going to be run individually similar, but not the same as, a mom & pop shop.
