I'm caring for my daughter's corn while she is in grad school. Things are going well as she spent a lot of time instructing me in Apollo's care before she left. In the reading I've done, I've seen varying expected life spans. What is your experience?

I think it really is a variety of lifespans a person could get from corns, which is why you read all different expectancies.

I have heard of corns living 32 years, but so far my personal average from what I have heard is abuot 15-20 years. :) Many corns are still breeding well into their "teens" :)

On average of 15-20 years.....and yes I too have heard of corn snakes going up for 32 years.....
but average I'd say is 20 more of less....

If you have any problems with the snake, just come up to this forum and ask....make sure you come to this forum more to read up on others so that you can also learn at the same time as we do....

Thanks for the replies. I know that typically the lifespan of any pet is affected by the care it receives. So, I expect this one to live a long and healthy life. Meanwhile, I do expect to be racking up the "mom" points for taking on this project.....
 
One of the great things about corn snakes is that they are really low-maintenance pets. (okay, maybe not if you have dozens of them!) And all in all, pretty inexpensive to keep. You're lucky your daughter wasn't into guinea pigs! Now those guys are high maintenance, and between the bedding and the food, they can cost lots. (I have a daughter who loves them :rolleyes: )
I'm sure your care is very much appreciated, and your daughter will have many more years to enjoy her corn snake!
BTW, I have a greyhound too - another wonderful low maintenance pet!

a zoo?

hey Ginny, what do you have over there in Holland a zoo?:p Good thing your only into corns or the guinea pigs could be food for some big boa or something, but i wouldn't tell your daughter that! ;) So what else is at the "zoo" other than the corn the guinea pigs and the dog? As many people come over to see my snakes I might as well charge admission! $1 to look and $5 to hold and maybe $10 for a pic while holding the snake. Hmmm now there is an idea...;) I might be able to earn enough to buy yet more snakes...

Other than the pets already mentioned, I just have 4 fish (3 are bettas). We used to have rabbits, hamsters, and hermit crabs as well as a couple of cats before we found out that our son was very allergic to them. You know, sometimes when I'm changing the guinea pigs' cage (it has to be cleaned every few days, so we all take turns) I imagine my sweet little corn snake with her mouth stretch around a big guinea pig butt! You know, her mouth just aint big enough - darn.

You could start a business by charging to view your snakes and then write off all the snake purchases and expenses on your taxes! That of course would include travel to and from reptile shows! Wow, why didn't we think of this before??

we might just be on to something here. I know what you mean about the guinea pigs, my son has a hamster and every time i change the bedding I think to myself, I bet Mr. Slithers (my ball python) would enjoy this tasty thing. But of course my son would cry for days if anything happend to his "George". it's funny how the people want to see the snakes but yet when I say go a head reach in there and pick them up nobody wants to. that and of course all the corns are hiding under the aspen so you really have to do a bit of searching to find them. Most of my friends are happy enough to look through the glass or in the rubber maid to see them and have no want to touch them though.
 
Yeah, same reactions here. What's kinda funny is it's my daughter's friends (young girls) that are more likely to actually touch the snake or hold it, whereas my son's 18 year old guy friends stand way back! I think more men have snake phobias than women, and with women it's usually spiders. :)
 
my son who is 4 will hold any one of my snakes, but a buddy of mine who is 23 will turn and run at the sight of them. Kinda funny how a man who is 6'2" and about 250 can be afraid of a corn that is not even 3 feet long. it's not like it's going to eat him or anything.
 
Yeah, that's the thing with phobias - they're irrational. My dad was 6'3" and a big guy and he'd go beserk when he saw a snake. It would happen often too becuz he built a golf course and managed it, and it was crawling with cute little garter snakes!
(my decription, not his!) I can't talk though, becuz I'm claustrophobic.
 
my house is a bit like a zoo too i guess. hehehe

i have:

1 x bull snake
1 x western garter
1 x crimson corn
1 x albino ferret
1 x sable ferret
1 x mad mutt of a dog
1 x the sweetest puddy cat

oh yeah and i have my nephue and he is a cheeky wee monkey hehehe

It must be my feminen side, I suffer from arachnaphobia. I have really tried to deal with them. I must admit I think they are fascinating, but I cant look at one without getting cold chills. Bring on the worst snake you can find, cobras, mambas, vipers, none rattle me as bad as spiders do! Maybe someday I'll get over it.

I have the exact same fear, I even hate the big house spiders that run around in my house or on my ceiling.

Yeah, both my son and daughter are arachnaphobes too, and I'm not sure if you ever grow out of it: My sister is in her 40's and has been afraid of spiders forever. With my claustrophobia I can sometimes suppress it because I know I'm phobic, but there's always that initial fear that grips you before you're even aware of what's happening! It was kinda funny to see my dad get startled by a garter snake and freak out for a few seconds! And I'm always teasing my kids as they jump on the couch after seeing a teeny spider on the floor! :D
 
I LOVE Spiders!!!

and have most of my neighbors convinced not to kill the giant orb weavers that spin their marvelous wheels that seem to sometimes span all the way across the yard.

The museum of Natural History in LA sponsered a 1st ever urban spider survey this past summer. It was really neat to learn more about the spiders that live in our area. It provided me with a great opportunity to get the neighborhood kids involved with "spider hunting" and truly amazing how many unusual types we found!

Now... when it comes to heights... don't even ask me to look out a window if I am in a high building!
 
I have been reading in this forum since August and you guys are the only ones who have tickled me :D I have recently aquired these corn snakes...my husbands idea, but I love them. They are all young, born some time in August, but I love playing with them. My nephew is 16 and terrified of them, but the girls 5, 8, 11 and 12 love them also. The 5 year old (step-daughter), cried because I wouldn't let Slytherin sleep with her like Jack (dog) does.


And as for the spiders, I hate them too, but my husband had a tarantula when we first were together. I didn't touch it for the 2 years, but I fed it and watered it. I got over being freaked out by it and just accepted it as another of God's creatures.

Another lots-of-critters person chiming in here...see 'em in the sig :)

I'm a lil weird because it's only some spiders that get me all twitchy - the ones with reeeeallly long legs - the more it looks like a daddy-longlegs, the more freaked out I get. Little jumping-spiders don't bother me at all...somehow their dimensions are more animal-like. & tarantulas look like alien rodents or something, so they're alright!

One guy working in a pet store thought he'd be Mr Cool when he was cleaning the emperor scorpion tanks & I was nosing around. 'Wanna hold one?' he asks, expecting me to shriek or something. ;) Of course I wanted to hold one! Just a big ol' hermie crab in a biker jacket, those scorpions :D

Getting back to the lifespan of cornsnakes, how long have they been being bred as pets or hobby critters?

I HATE spiders. If one touches me I will FREAK OUT.

That being said...in my bedroom I have two tarantulas.
1. Bolivian Salmon Pink which should attain a 7 inch leg span.
2. A Brazilian Salmon Birdeater which should be 7-10 inches as an adult. Hopefully!

hehehe. As much as I hate spiders, I love having tarantulas because I never have to touch them, they are the lowest maintance pet and they dont bug me! haha :)
