I'm just getting started out as being a feeder breeder. I picked up two females and a male from the pet store two weeks ago. The one female looked like she was getting close to poping. I got her home, put them in the tank I had set up for them... 30 minutes later, I check on them... and the female who was very fat... now was skinny as a pencil. No blood, no nothing..... went from being fat to very skinny. I have no idea what happend. But they are all still together, so hopefulyl they will breed, if not already.

So I found a good mouse breeder around here and got two more females and a male from him, and set them up in another tank. The male is three months old and the females are about 4-5 weeks old. So hopefully they will breed.

Do guys have any tips for successful breeding?

Hi Lilly and Welcome!!

I would suggest just doing a search, there is a ton of information in this forum and online. I read a great article about keeping 4 - 6 females per male and have found pretty good success with that. I just started about 3 or 4 weeks ago and have already had two, although small, litters. I'm not worried about it though because I picked pretty young mice, so expected the first litters to be small.

I spent quite a bit of time picking them. Actually my girls and I had a blast finding cute colors and handling them all. I disqualified any that bit me and only picked those who seems as though they would be easily handled. So far so good.

I really wanted to pick dwarf hampsters because they are adorable and the ones posted here looked sweet, but mice, on average, have bigger litters.

Maybe I'll get a dwarf hampster or two...hehe
