Placement of UTH question

World's Tallest Midget
I am setting up my 55 gallon tank this weekend (snakes due to arrive next week), and I have a quick question about my UTH.

I have an Exo-Terra stick-on heater. One side has a white backing (with the sticky underneath) and the other side has a clear film (that says "exo-terra"). Is the clear film supposed to be removed? I wasn't sure if it was to keep it protected in the box in the manner cell phones have the covering on the face.

Any quick replies are appreciated!

just remove the backing and stick it on... since its a bigger tank the glass should be thick enough that you wont need to stick it to a tile first :)

Seriously? I was about to run out to get a piece of glass that I could stick the heater to, and then place under the tank. I figured it could then use the heater again if I need to, and I wasn't sure how hot the darn thing would actually get the bottom glass.

Thanks for the quick response!

I've already rigged a rheostat to control the UTH (which I wouldn't have known about if not for this forum!).

The UTH should only get to 30C at most.. Hence the glass is fine
Got one under my glass viv and no problems cause it just isnt getting anywhere near the temp to cause any..
Stuck to the outside underside, themostatically controlled. Ure viv bottom is probably just sitting slightly above ure worktop due to the vivs bottom lip.

I monitored and set mine up for a few days with a digital temp probe..
Thats about it :) Oh the 30C is measured on the inside floor of the glass where the snake gets belly contact.

How do I know this.......... Cause I found it out from asking the same question myself and all the people with far more experience than me told me...
:)

instead of sticking it on the tank, you can tape it the bottom. once the adhesive is on the glass the uth can be damaged if you try to remove it and aren't careful.

if I tape it to the bottom, what type of tape is best? Also, will the backing on the UTH cause a problem when it is heated?

I use good ole duck tape, and it's still sticking with no problem. I check it every two months when cleaning. No problems here.!

Ahhh, duct tape. Oe of the greatest of man's creations.....that and WD-40! :grin01:

Wanted to give you all a big "THANK YOU!" for answering what is probably a worn-out question. I just want to get everything right before my shipment arrives!

Thanks again!

I actually don't stick my UTH to anything. I simply set them underneath my tanks. No tape, no sticky mess :crazy02: Then again I do live in Arizona and probably don't need as much direct heat applied in order to keep my viv's the proper temp. A lot of people do the tile thing in order to distribute the heat more evenly. Those things can get HOT!!!!! :flames:

It has been fairly cold up here this winter, and the snakes will be in the basement (it's basically our living room). Since I have it hooked up to a rheostat, I am seriously considering just duct taping it to the tank.

Ok, stupid question: Which side do you guys have facing the glass? Is it the side that would be stuck if the backing was removed?
