One of my Pinkies is missing!

Kahn's Mommy
I'm new to breeding mice. One of my females just had her litter yesterday. She had 7 babies...and today there are only 6! I don't know if she ate it..or if its just missing somehwere in the nest. I don't want to look for it bacause I'm afraid I'll disturb her. I checked the nest twice, when I woke up and just now and there are still only 6.

Should I just leave her alone and see if a baby (live or corpse) turns up? Or should I poke around the nest a little bit? Theres no blood anything if she ate or...or no little body parts. She seems very loving to all her babies, they are nursing right now.

Well don't go diggin in the nest. If she did eat it, She either ate it because there was something wrong, needed the protien, or population control. It happens a few times. Don't worry to much. Just keep an eye out. It might progress to a problem. One of my ex breeders had that problem. But shes no longer living so, its much better since then. Maybe someone more experienced will come in and help you more. Or give you more Idas. But deffinatly don'ts "oogle" over the tank to much or that will also cause her to eat them. Just let them be.

I wouldn't know My rats are still young, and the pet store here is cheap and won't tell me how old they are. But kinda like mice, are the light cycles fine. how is the temp....all that jazz. Sorry if i'm not as responsive as before, But I'm sick so I'm sorry.
Some one more experienced will answer sooner or later.

re

well their light cycle could be better they havn't beed going out side latly and their temp has been going down cause of winter but ther are not freezing to death
i have them next to a lamp

Well my mice and rats are on a same time cycle 12:12 (its kinda hard to maintain that seeing as how far north I am.) So I too have them next to a lamp My homes roughly in the 20-21 degrees Celcius (not sure the feriheight to that). but my mice are fine. My Rats don't get out ot often either. I have them under a window. So I don't know. Hopefully soon the seniors in here will come in.

hello i have two meduim rats male and female i've had them for almost two months and no pinkies. why is that

It is not very tactful to hijack someone's thread to get answers to your own question, especially when the question is not related. You started your own thread anyways (like you should have done). I don't know how many people get offended when this happens to them, but I know it's irksome to me when it's not even my thread.

try not to worry too much, hopefully if left alone the mouse's mothering instinct will take over, but if disturbed too much they are naturally programmed to recoup the energy expended in producing a litter, by eating the whole lot. I know hamsters and gerbils will do the same thing, especially with their first litter, but can then go on to raise a family successfully. was there much activity around the cage? one of my favorite gerbils took 4 attempts (and having her cage put in a cupboard) before i got the babies i wanted. good luck, J

Nope, no activity around the nest. She's in my bedroom. I'm almost never in there, I rarely even sleep at home (hey...I'm a college student...what do you want? lol.) I usually only check on her in the morning when I give her fresh food and water. All the other babies are fine. She doesn't seem stressed by me being around, she is extremely laid back. She crawls on my hand and sniffs me. I just checked her only to change her necessities (food and H2O.) The missing pinky must have been defective, because everyone else is doing great.

:shrugs: I don't know. Maybe it a troubled kid. I know my mom probably wanted to cull me when I was young. hahaha

off topic kinda. i remember one time when i was carrying a a few pinkies to the freezer and one was missing by the time i got there, i thought i must of dropped it. never did find it, i actually was moving away the next day anyway
