Hello,

this is my first time owning a snake and its the first time i have experienced my snake shedding...and i was wondering how long does it usually take for them to shed... my baby corn has had some skin stuck on the top of his head and and a little after the head but nothing else is coming off, but it does seem like his old skin is about to come off. Is there anything i need to do to help him shed or will he be ok? he's been like this for 4 days now...
thanks
greg

a few tips

Welcome to the forum, this is a great place to learn a million different tricks, and answers to a million different questions you might have. One of the thing I do is put them in a bowl of lukewarm water for a while, this helps loosen the skin and helps it fall off. When you notice it is shedding time, spray the tank down to keep the humidty up. You can tell when your snake is going to shed by looking at it's eyes. If they are really cloudy it is time to give a bath and raise the humidty. Also you can put your snake in a pillow case with some wet paper towels (just make sure it can't get out!) If you have some skin that just won't come off you can get your hands wet and the snake wet and try to pull it off. Do that very gently of course! Hope these help you out a bit..

Yeah...

Giving your snake a few baths when shedding time comes around will help a lot. A few days ago my Carolina had a really nasty shed; after trying for a couple of hours, she had only managed to get a few bits of skin from around her head off so I had to help her out a bit. I put her in the sink which was full of cool, sort of warm, water and let her crawl through my hands. This seemed to help.

Welcome to the forums.

Usually all that is needed is to have a water dish large enough for the snake to get into and soak. The large majority of Corns will use their water dish to loosen their skin and shed with no problem. To high of humidity can cause other problems such as bacterial infections. The occasional bad shed can be removed by hand soaking and hand removing. Bad shed is usually a sign of bad husbandry or ill health and should be examined carefully. IMHO

Something that I found that works well for my snakes is to soak a hand towel in warm water. Wring it out and wrap it around the snake that is about to shed. They seem to like this better than bath.
