I need some help on heat issue. We have built our final enclosure for our sunkissed corn snake but I need a recommendation for heat source. It is made of MDF and has a glass front on glass track.

It has two 2" vents on each side and measures 14 ¾ (D) x 17 ¾ (H) x 46 (L)

We know we don't want heat lamps ( issue with mentally disabled child ) so what heat source would you use? Cables, mats, ????

We really would prefer not to have something he can physically touch or set on but rather something that introduces heat to his environment. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not up on wooden cages yet I have to build some soon for my snakes. I have a link that might help you though.

That one of three way to go I think. You might be able to place a under tank heater in or under a wooden cage too?????
But somebody with more experience will chime in soon

Good Luck

I would not put a UTH under wood. It says on the packaging that a UTH is only best for glass. It probably would become too hot and pose a fire hazard.

I would go with the heat tape, personally. Or maybe you could fit the wooden cage with a glass bottom if it hasn't been fully built yet. Then you could use a UTH. You can buy glass at home depot in pre cut pieces.

Hope this helps!

an UTH might not be able to heat the subtrate through the wood. wood is more of an insulator rather than conductor of heat.

Perhpas you could affix the UTH to a ceramic tile, then put the tile inside the tank. I don't know if this would work, though. All my tanks are glass.

There's always heat panels. Big Apple herps sells cheap ones that should work fine for you. They affix inside the viv on the roof or sides and are not supposed to get warm enough to burn. Combined with a rheostat or thermostat, it should do the trick.
