Constriction

Will a corn snake only constrict it's food if it is live? I have been feeding mine frozen, and he has never constricted his food. But when I fed him a live fuzzy a while back, he didn't constrict it either.

Don't corns normally constrict thier live prey??

No, some will also constrict frozen/thawed. I have a number of corns that do this. Most are adults and yearlings, but I've even some hatchlings constrict their f/t pinkies. It just depends on the snake.

Lots of hatchlings don't, they just gobble down the pinkies. Many corns will constrict the larger mice, though. When I've fed live fuzzies and hoppers, the snake always constricted it's prey.

Constriction is a natural reaction towards moving prey, if the snake isnt a shy eater, as it grabs ahold of the mouse with foreceps or something you can wiggle it a little bit which is usually enough for them to start wrapping around. Many snakes will often eat pinkies and fuzzies alive too as there is no reason to waste energy constricting if the thing isnt going to harm them or run away.
