Ok i have been reading alot about feeding prey item 1.5x the girth of the largest part of the snake. How do I measure that? My snake is around 20grams in weight and i have been feeding it 2 lil fuzzies every 4-5 days ..they seem so huge to take in his mouth but leave just a lil bump in the rest of him..can he get hurt if the food is to large to fit in his mouth?

First of all, I can't believe a nine year old child wrote this. It's a very well written, thought out question. Good job.

And It sounds like your doing another good job on food size. I would think your on track. If your feeding your snake f/t mice just size one up next to the snake and the f/t should be a tad bigger. And you would be shock what "fit" in the snakes mouth
.
Good Luck

ok..i admit my son is 9 -I (mom) do some helping with typing and getting his thoughts together for all the questions he has..Its been a great learning experience for both of us..we are new snake owners and want to be successful at it. You would be amazed at how much better the kids typing is compared to their handwriting these days ..thanks for the info

Yeah, I thought something was up?? Ha! Ha!.
But I think it is great that you and your son are sharing a hobby together. I started with my youngest daughter but she lost interest.
There are a few other moms here, who do the same. I just think it a great idea.

Good luck

thanks lenny..ive also been doig some searching for taming..we have had our snake for 5 weeks now and it just stays under the aspen most time and when we bring it out it just spends its time just darting around trying to get away..

Hmmm. How big is the tank you have him in and how many things to you have in it for him to hide in/under? He could be stressed and afraid because he doesn't have enough clutter in his home. Also how big is he? If he's just a hatchling to yearling size (roughly 10-18 inches)then he might need some extra things for hiding just because they are so tiny and frightened of wide open spaces.

I agree with Lennycorn in that you share such a cool hobby with your son. If only my mom had gotten into snakes with me. Too bad she hates them :nope:
If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask!

Best of luck!!!! :D

It is normal for snakes to always be hiding, especially if they are young. Corn snakes are primarily nocturnal anyway, so they come out at night. The reason he darts away is because he is young and scared. Just keep handling him for about 10 minutes a day and he will calm down.

My son and I are sharing the hobby also. He was afraid of snakes (I can't imagine why, he certainly didn't get that from me) until just a few months ago. Now he shares almost every aspect of their keeping with me. He is still a bit squeamish about feeding though. He says he can't bear to watch that little mousy face going into the snake's mouth. I explain to him that the mice are already dead and don't know what is happening to them, and he says, "Yeah, I know, but still I just feel so sorry for the mouse!"

I guess that means when he grows up and goes off on his own, I'LL get his snakes! :grin01:
