Terrarium help

would a Exo-Terra Glass Terrarium be a good choice for a cage for a corn snake? Im thinking of earning enough money too get one but would it be a good choice? It is 18 x 18 x 18. It can be found at petsmart. Check it out on the reptile section

It wouldn't be too bad of a choice but it wouldn't be the best choise because if it has the door at the front it could stress the snake out, i think i heard that some where. I just have a normal aquarium with a locking lid its much cheaper and i think it would be a better choice or just a rubbermaid container would be the cheapest and best for space if thats an issue to. but i'm no expert so i could be wrong

You're actually better off getting vivs that have more floor space than height because corns are basically terrestrial in nature. So in other words, you will do better getting a tank that is wider and longer than high.

I have to get something like that because my mom is terrified of snakes so i have to get something like that so she will let me have one

A viv. is stands for vivarium which is just a home for your snake to live its not any one thing in particular it's just what you keep it in is called a vivarium.

A vivarium (viv) is your snake's home. They come in all shapes and sizes. Height isn't really needed for corns so one that has more floor space would be good. You can use a fish tank with a screen lid. They also sell tanks designed for reptiles and have sliding lids that lock in place. Your mom's terrified of snakes but she's letting you get one? :shrugs:

So sorry question if she's not letting you get one and you can't convince her why are you looking for vivs so you can get a snake? if you don't mind me asking....

There's really no fool proof cage yet (I wish there were) so escapes happen. Point out to her that they make no noise, don't smell, eat only once a week, and poop once a week (or so). ;) The perfect pet in my opinion. Try to get her to handle one, maybe that would help :shrugs: . I understand people with snake phobias because I have a spider one but at least I'm working on mine (I held a pink tow at the pet store and that's a HUGE step :D I never used to be able to look at a picture without hyperventalating). I know my fear is unrealistic and it gets in the way of daily life so I've been working the past few months to get over it :). So . . . On a scale of one to ten how big is your mom's fear (or is it dislike)? lol Good luck with your mom!

Yea thats what my mom told me, and I told her "no it won't". I have lost almost all my snakes, but you can find them if you look properly. oh never lost one permantly. "What momma don't know about ain't gonna hurt momma." keep that in mind

i have a major phobia of spiders i guess thats why i was a bit scared of mauritius but she's all fine now and my nerves have gone too

i still dont think i could go anywhere near a spider eeeek!!

If your mom doesn't want one in the house, maybe you should wait until you're out on your own.
BTW, I've never had a snake escape, so as long as you're really careful, that shouldn't happen.
Keep talking to her about it, maybe she will say its okay.
The exoterra, though it looks good, is made more for reptiles that climb up. Corns are more terrestrial (though the can and do climb), so they like a longer bottom instead of height.

I just wanted to put in my 2 cents...

First off you asked about the exo terra 18"x18" vivarium. Although this size would be ok for a baby it is really not going to be big enough once the snake gets bigger. Most people recommend at the very minimum something that is two feet long x 12". Thus this viv would only be for a baby, however I have worked in the pet industry for years and can tell you that a hatchling corn can escape these vivs by getting out near where the glass slides in the track.

As for the door in the front comment I believe they have things backwards. If you are dealing with agressive snakes <which I wouldn't count a corn as anyway> it is often better not to come directy from the top as it can startle them into thinking you are a predator. It is believed it may be a bit better if they can see you coming from the front.

As for the escape comment, again from experience and being in the pet trade I can tell you that the fates are definitely stacked against you. It is more than likely that your snake will escape at some point. Yes I know many people who have been very carefull and NEVER lost their snakes but as far as promising someone and telling them it DEFINITELY won't happen, that's like PROMISING you will never have an accident. I do feel though that your chances for sucess are much better if you are getting an adult and not a baby snake...

Good for you on doing research before going out and getting your pet. How old are you? Can you do some sort of extensive research project or something and do a well thought out presentation to your mom to show her how much you have thought things out and how much trouble you are willing to go through to get your new pet?

Good luck
Rebecca

nice idea rebecca 13 i think the lad is, my mother was the same but i dont live with her now so it's changed i have wanted a snake since i was like 13 or something too :D

Are you planning on buying all the stuff while still trying to convinse your mom? My sister did this lol. She wanted a dog but her husband didn't want one so she worked for months to convince him. She baught and set out all the stuff; food dish's on the floor, leash hanging on the wall etc. Hopefully your mom will come around to your way of thinking  . I was never alowed any snakes growing up. My dad and step-mom are scared of them.
