Pyro is missing!!

She's gone, like GONE. She isn't anywhere near the tank (or the mice right next to her tank which I figured might have interested her) She isn't in the couch or under the couch. . . you get the idea. How far might she have gone? I have a 900sf apartment with a sizable gap under the front door and a hole in my wall from an old cable hook up. I'm worried she left the apartment because my cats are both laying around the house like bothing happened and they are usually fascinated by her when she's out of the cage.

She dissapeared somewhere between 10pm last night and 8 am this morning.

Are there any tricks to finding snakes?!

when our snake escaped a few weeks ago we thought he had disappeared for good. We found him 2 weeks later when we werent even looking for him hidden behind some art work of my boyfriends, against the wall.

You can leave food down for her and water. Check in all dark/warm places. Its highly doubtful she has left the apartment yet, as we found our snake abbout 2metres away from his tank a whole 2 weeks later!! they dont go far!

Good luck!

I would weather strip that door and tape up that hole, it might not be too late! I'd keep an eye on the cats this evening. Good Luck!

Suggestions for finding Pyro

FIRST: FILL IN THE OLD CABLE LINE HOLE!!!! DON’T JUST SHOVE PAPER IN IT, CAUSE HE WILL PUSH THAT OUT.

SEAL IT WITH GREAT FOAM OR MASKING TAPE, SOMETHING SOLID THAT CAN NOT BE PUSHED THROUGH.

SECOND: JAM A TOWEL , UNDER YOUR FRONT DOOR GAP, AND I MEAN JAM IT HARD OR HE WILL WORK HIS WAY AROUND IT.

IF YOU KNOW THERE ARE EXITS AND YOU DON’T BLOCK THEM THEN TRYING THE BELOW EFFORTS ARE PRETTY MUCH USELESS, SO BLOCK THE ESCAPE ROUTES.

To find him there are 4 very sound way’s to capture escaped or lost snakes

I would do all 4 at the same time in attempts to locate your snake as soon as possible.

(1) Pop bottle traps - an example is pictured below.

This image is provided from another post in this forum by pgr8dnlvr ( great pic & probably will be a help to many in this forum when trying to figure out how to make a pop bottle trap ) - Good job pgr8dnlvr :wavey:

These are made by cutting a pop bottle top off, then inverting it into the bottle itself and taping it in place. Place a pinkie inside and wait. If the snake finds it and goes in to retrieve the pinkie, he will find once he has eaten he can’t get his now engorged body out of the bottle opening.

Once you have him, peel the tape off which holds the bottle and top in place and put your little fella back in his viv to rest and get some heat.

(2) Plastic bag traps - Take empty plastic bags ( The crinkly light weight kind you get at grocery stores or Wal-Mart, etc. ) Don’t use trash can bags, they are useless as the point here is to listen for rustling.

Lay the plastic bags all along the walls in the house as snakes generally go to baseboards to move about rooms and is generally there pattern of travel. Once you lay them out set back, turn down the lights and listen for the rustling of the bags.

I myself have a cat so I know how cats and plastic bags are, you really need to remove the cats from the house for a night because the cats will just play with the bags and move them which makes it pointless to use them and that would be sad because it is such a good way to find them.

(3) Flour Traps: Take flour and scatter at least an inch long strip in front of doorways ( yep even carpeted doorways, it vacuums up so don’t worry ) if the flour was trod through you will see a direction of movement which will help you pin point the location he was headed and provide a narrower search and locate position in the home.

(4) Heat Source Trap: Lay a heat source in an area of the house with a pinkie near it, I personally would open the head cavity so it can really smell the pinkie. This will give him a heat source, which he will most likely be seeking out and food, which he may also be seeking out. If you choose this method, use the plastic bags leading up to the heat source. That way you can hear him as he heads for it. Just don’t put the pinkie directly on the heat source because it will dry it out and evaporate any liquid in the pinkie itself making it worthless as far as being a food item for your snake.

I hope some of this helps, also do a forum search on places snakes hide and look in all those places. A favorite place seems to be bathrooms because of their heat and moisture levels created when people bathe. But search for escaped snake hiding places to further your search.

The sooner you find him the better.

Thank you so much for all your help I put out some bags but the cats did indeed get to them. They also seemed interested in the couch so I put out a bottle trap with a pinky, went into the other room for a bit, came back and my cat was PLAYING with her on the rug :(

She doesn't look good. One of her eyes is bulged out of her head and he mouth is kind of open. She doesn't have any cuts I can see but she was in the cats mouth so I have to assume he was biting at her.

ANy advice? I'm heartbroken, I feel soo awful. She's in her viv under the heat lamp because I didnt know what else to do for her.

I'm so sorry, that's just awful. Not much you can do except get to the vet asap and keep her quiet and undisturbed in the meantime. I'd put her in a sterile (paper towels) environment that way aspen etc will not stick to her. She's been through some trauma, if she makes it to the vet ok hopefully they can help her. Meanwhile don't handle her or cause any more stress than she's already been through.

I can only assume that her eye got scratched or the saliva of the cat's mouth may of burned the eye, which would be the cause for the bulge.

It doesn't sound good, as far as the mouth being open, your little girl may be in shock or just rapid breathing from the trauma or fear she went through.

You did all you could, so no matter what happens, don't beat yourself up over this. Things like this happen and the fact is we all learn though failure right? I mean we didn't walk until we fell on our tushies a few times. That is just how things go sometimes.

Let us know how she is and if she made it or not. I will keep her in my prayers.

:wavey:

Just letting everyone hear know that Pyro did not make it to this morning to see a vet. Thank you to everyone who gave suggestions I will be better prepared if (god forbid) I should ever be in this situation again.

I am sorry for your loss

TANGLD, though this loss is hard just know that you did what you could and you also learned a lot the short time you had her.

We all learn more everyday, no one goes into this an expert, even the experts started out as new owners at some point.

The things you learned about snakes you can attribute to the time you had her and invested in her because you loved her. So it wasn't in vain.

Try not to beat yourself up, these things really do happen to even the most seasoned owner, just read some of the previous posts.

Hang in there, the right little fella or gal will come along and snake right into your heart again. :wavey:
