Goal in life to escape???

First time in the forum, like to say hi to everyone! Name's Robert. :D I have a baby cornsnake named Pork who seems to spend most of his time (away from the hide holes) attempting to find a way out of his viv... is this normal, or do I just have a little porker with Attention Deficit Disorder?

I wouldn't say it's his goal in life to escape but a lot of corns seem to spend most of their time looking for a way out. Perfectly normal behaviour for a healthy snake:).

A snake with ADD - LOL :D :D :D

Welcome to the forums BTW, they're ace and addictive - be prepared to spend a long time in here ...

Welcome to the forums.

Probably just normal behavior but there are a couple of things to check to make sure your snake is happy. Do you have a hide on the cool side (75) and a hide on the warm side (85)? Are temps right? Plenty of fresh water? Clean cage?

Oh yes, got all the fixings in my viv. 3 hide holes... one in the warm, one in between with some fake moss stuff that he likes to hide in a lot, and one in the cold. Water dish big enough for Pork to curl up in (on the cool side), climing branches, under tank heater and basking lamp to keep temp on warm side at a steady 83 degrees... fed him yesterday and he ate it right up, so hopefully his stress went down. I think he's just getting used to his new viv... other than that he seems like he's a cool snake! ;) One other thing though, I'm assuming "he" is a guy... the pet store said you couldn't determine quite yet the sex... yay or nay?

Yes, actually you can determine the sex of a snake that age. The two main ways of doing it for a hatchling are probing and popping. You shouldn't try either one without first having an experienced vet or herper show you how. Popping involves making the hemipenes of a male snake "pop" out of the vent. Probing involves carefully putting the probe into the vent and seeing how far it will go.

If you want to know whether Pork is truly a boy or a girl, find a vet or someone else who is experienced with sexing snakes to do it for you. Fortunately, Pork isn't a particularly masculine name, so if he turns out to be a she you won't feel the need to change her name! :)
