Do you have any tips for finding tiger salamanders? I'm going to be on St. Catherines Island, GA, in a couple of weeks and it would be fun to find a salamander. I never get to see any out west.

Salamanders....eh? Well, the best place to look for the terrestrial salamanders (Tigers, Marbled, Spotted, Mole most any of the ambystomids) is under moist areas like logs and the like. Usually in close proximity of water. However, with it being rather dry now...they tend to bury themselves and you don't see many this time of year. Takes a good rain to make them move.

The other salamanders (Desmognathus etc.) can be found in most of the cold water streams in upstate GA and SC. Pretty much flip any rock in the shallow water and you'll see the salamanders.

Good luck.

Thanks everyone for the compliments on the pictures!
