Heating Help!

Spot the corn

New member
I just got a baby corn snake, named him Spot. He's great, but I need a little help with the heating. His tank gets below 70 degrees at night but is a good temperature during the day, 75-85 degrees. I use a 75 watt basking lamp during the day and have a heating pad for humans but the temperature is not regulated and it gets too hot to leave on for more than half an hour. I have been turning it on for a while at night to keep the temperature up but it still gets below 70 late at night. I was wondering if a "Zoo Med Repti-Therm Under Tank Heater 8 watt" would be a good choice for Spot at night. He is in a 10 gallon tank right now. And one more question. When should I upgrade him to a larger tank? I would like to get a 30 gallon long tank eventually, but he's only 15 inches at this point. How soon should I get a new one?

Yes you need to be able to control the temps. As it is you are just watching them fluctuate up and down. You need to get a thermostat or rheostat to control the heat. And yes the uth you mention would be better.
The general rule is a min of 20 L tank for a year old corn snake.

In the links provided there is a link to make your own rheostat.

Good Luck

Welcome to the site!!!!!!!! There is a lot of information here. Be sure to read the FAQ section in the forums. They answer a lot of questions

Thanks Lenny! I built a rheostat. It was really easy and cheap. Thanks for the advice. I am still working on getting the temperature right, but I think it will work great with the heating pad that I have. This sites great. I'm glad to be a new member.

Just remeber with a Rheostat that you still need to keep an eye on the temperature. Think of it like a volume control with the heat given off by the mat as the volume. Your rheostat will set the 'volume' or heat on the mat and then just leave it there. If external factors change then the tank still may get too hot or cold.

Thermostats control the temperature better and start of reasonably cheap. Is a few more $ really too much to make sure you're snake's ok?

oh, and I forgot to mention - you'll be able to use a thermostat in your bigger set up when his tank's upgraded so its not dead money...

I just wanted to say that Spots tank stayed between 79 and 83 degrees last night. The low in my house was 63, I wish i slept in his tank. Thanks again for all the help.

heating the tank up

i am getting a tank for christmas and it has got a light socket so what do i do when my snake gets to hot like in the night when i am asleep so i need to know what to do. :)

I just wanted to mention that the Zoomed 4watt (mini size, "up to 5 gallon") is the perfect size for a ten gallon. The 8 watt size (I think its the small) is too big, even though it says 10-20 gallon.
