Corn Snake Help!!!!!

The pinkies price varies from what price you buy them from. Corn snakes do not have elaborate cage requirements. If you wish to display your snake, an adult can be housed in a twenty gallon aquarium, or you can build your own custom cage. The most important thing is that the cage be escape proof, as these snakes will definitely liberate themselves, if given the opportunity. An ambient temperature of 75-80F with a basking spot reaching 85F should be provided, especially with young snakes. The temperature can safely drop to 70F at night as long as proper temps are available during the day. Some good substrates for the bottom of the tank are newspaper, pine bark chips (from a pet store, no pesticides), or aspen bedding. Newspaper is probably the best substrate available. It is clean and cheap. When it gets soiled just crumple it up and throw it away. Although seemingly perfect in every way, unfortunately newsprint is not very eye appealing. This is where pine bark chips come in. If properly obtained (through a reputable pet store) they are relatively clean. The soiled pieces can be scooped out as they appear and the whole tank can be emptied on a regular basis and disinfected. Aspen bedding is my personal favorite. The manufacturers claim the pieces are small enough so that if ingestion occurs no harm will come to the animal. In fact, I have seen all my snakes ingest the Aspen at one time or another. I have used it successfully for several years now.
Pine shavings, corncob, and sand are no good because they can easily become ingested and lead to impaction. Dirt from outside is not suitable because it has bacteria and could have parasites in it. (Dirt can be used in emergency situations, although I can't imagine what that could be. Just put the dirt in a pan and bake it at 300 degrees for about 15 minutes. Let it cool first before putting it into the cage, obviously.)
Your Corn Snake needs a hide box in which to feel secure. I have used many different objects for this purpose. Half a log, a small cardboard box with a hole cut in the side, various fake logs from the pet store, and even a heavy plastic cup if there's nothing else around. The shelter should be slightly larger than the animal so it can touch all the sides and feel cozy. Whatever you choose it should be easily cleaned or disposed of (in the case of the box) when soiled.

I was impressed by your answer, grammar and language until i read this.
pine is the biggest NO NO you could get for a corn snake...

The oils from pine can cause major resperatory problems and unlimatley lead to the snakes death!!!

I am rather dissapointed in your statement about pine here as your seem to have experience with snakes... :shrugs:

Ahh, I am so sorry! I copied the pine idea from a website on corns, and before I had a chance to reread it, I posted. Your right, my sister uses aspen for her snakes. I will recheck everything I post from now on so this does not happen again! =]

:sidestep: I know about but personal esperience is better and i was going to get another snake but i saw that corn snake in the terriaum and fell in love with that snake. and most resource for the snake has came from the internet and almost everyone has said something differen. so thank you for all the help you have supplied me with. but if some one can tell what type of size the snake well get? and will a 20L cage work if some one can fill in the blanks it would be real helpful thank you very much. :cheers:

Actually, CEDAR is the biggest NO NO you could get for a corn snake. Pine has been used successfully by many people for a long long time. It is only recently being 'suspected' of causing problems with snakes and other reptiles.

I would personally guess that's why he's here . . . to ask questions and learn about it!! He isn't getting the snake until this summer as he stated to begin with.

A 20L would be almost perfect for your snake as it grows. Great job coming here for the answers to your questions before getting the snake!!

I don't think there is a set answer for that question. I live in Southern OR and depending on the time of year they go from $1.00-$2.00 per pinkie, fuzzies and feeders run around $1.25. Keep in mind it may be very different where you live. But call around in your area.

As stated pinks in a pet store are going to cost from $.85-$2.00, and up from there to fuzzies, hoppers, and adults.

does anyone know what type of snake this is its almost albino but has red patches on him what type of corn snake is that. and do i need uv lighting or will a basking lamp work. :eek1:
