Hampsters as food

Hi everyone, my snakes eat live/stunned mice or pinkies. Can snakes get the same nutrional value from hampsters. I have feed hampster pinkies a few times no problem, just curious if it could be a steady diet.
thanks susan :wavey:

You can feed hamsters, but they are generally more expensive and less easy to procure than mice so you'll generally want to stick with the mice. Some snakes won't switch back over if they eat something different.

I've seen a few sites in which frozen hamsters are sold, but mainly just mice, rats, and rabbits. I owned and actually had my hamsters breed when I was young and they acted very similar to mice and rats. Although, if I remember correctly, hamsters are more aggressive as far as biting... so f/t hamsters would be your best bet. As far as nutritional value, I would think they would be the same... but then again, thats just my opinion. Hopefully someone more knowledgable can help you.

Rodent Pro has a listing of the nutrient content of many different prey items including Hamsters.

Once they get started, my dwarf hamsters produce just as well as my mice. The ones that I have hand raised very seldomly bite. The pinkies and fuzzies do have teeth though so I'd definitely feed frozen thawed once they start eating hamster fuzzies.

I agree with Meg, sometimes snakes can get fussy and will refuse to eat any other type of food once they have been eating the same thing for awhile. One cure for this is to alternate feedings, mouse one week, hamster the next, then mouse.....

First off let me say although I feed live I always stun, before feeding. I have used them from my colony of hampsters when mice weren't available because of the heat. No one local carries frozen (PetSmart is about 25 miles). Although dwarf hampsters are aggressive, cannibalistic, little rodents, they breed rapidly and don't smell as bad as mice. Also my granddaughter loves raising them even if they becomesnake food.
My main concern is nutritional value???? Please some of you experts out there help me.:shrugs:

So hampster babies have teeth even as a pinky? Yikes! Little rodents indeed....

Yup! teeth nothing like a vicious bite from a pinky hampster :crazy02: , but yes they do.
Well now Carol I have looked up the site and done a brief "google" search on the nutritional requirements of snakes. Do they require ^fat ^protien or ... :shrugs: Alas no one seems in my brief search to care, I'm just nerdy eough to want to know.

I believe the hamsters are a little more higher in fat and have less protien, but I think you will be OK. I'd do a diet of both.

P.S. I also agree that hamsters smell way less than mice! I really love mine. Even though they nibble a little bit more often than mice, they are friendlier. The will jump in to my hand willingly.

I have to agree with Carol - hamsters are full of personality. Mine produce less pinkies, more often = same total number. And...they have less odor and haven't cannibalized like my mice do. However, they can be nippy when you try to take their babies...hehehe.

I want to buy a male and couple female hamsters, how can you tell the sex of them? At my petshops they all have young ones and the staff don't know how to sex them!! Could you help me>?

Females have the two whole / lump things close togeather males have a gap between them. Tell them its normally in the books on how to look after them so looking it up should be easy to do. Grrr I hate it when shops sell animails and dont know what the hell they are doing personally I would not use that pet shop if they cant even sex a hampster.

Does this mean i can get rid of the smelly, nippy annoying wee critters!!! *dances*

Yes that sounds cruel but they bite, they are very aggressive, you cant get them out their cage because they are so skittish, and to top it off, every damn night at the same time (early hours) they run on their squeeky wheel for HOURS!!!

I dont like my dwarf hampysters!

Sarah can you come to my house, becasue in all 200 Dwarf hampsters I had I could never get it right. A friend got a hammy from me and took it to the vet and she sexed it wrong. Not to get :-offtopic It isn't as bad as the reptile store here that can't sex a corn snake. :eek1: susan

200 = Hamsters are very prolific aren't they?
I sold a couple of hatchlings last year to some people that bred hamsters. They said they were overflowing with hamster pinks and wanted a snake or two to help keep the population in check - I wonder how that's working out for them! I can imagine those two snakies are well fed little guys...

It is really pretty easy to sex gerbils and dwarf hamsters. You use a small misting bottle to spray their backsides with water, enough so that the fur is matted down. Then you can see very obvious testicles protruding on boys (look from beneath, don't turn them upside down). The anogenital distance is also easier to see with wet fur, in the case of young hamsters where testicles aren't as apparent.

It's really hard to tell with the fur covering everything, but as long as it's out of the way, they're nearly as easy as mice.

This is a bit late, but I finally had time for some pics. First round, to show just how mean, nasty, and evil dwarf hamsters are. Sorry for some blurry pics, the little devils don't sit still.
See the pics of them willingly climbing into my hand? I guess their plans were to run up and go for the jugular. ;)
J/K. Just to show they are not ALL bad, some can be quite sweet and much more outgoing than mice.

As for the male/female thing, I can't get it right when they are young'uns. I guess my eyes just arn't that sharp. It is very obvious in mature adults though.
See the females in the first two pics have nice round rears.
The male in the last two has, what I call, classic triangle butt. (And yes I know that's not really his butt)
