Hey all you feeder-breeders!

I just had to tell this story to someone who, I know, would appreciate it. I have been working on my mouse colonies, switching them slowly over to dwarf hamster colonies. I have about 6 established so far. Two are in 20 L that sit on the bottom of a garage type shelving in my snake room. The 20 L are old reptile cages that I've set up for the hamsters.

Over the past three days I have had 3 females die on the lowest cage and 1 female on the upper cage. I was terribly puzzled by this - I've had deaths, I mean, these things happen right? But 4 in 3 days and 3 from one cage alone was really puzzling me.

This morning, about 2 am I wander into the snake/mouse room and on the upper cage is another dead hammy!! Only this ones head is slimy wet to her shoulders. I pull her out and look at her - no bites just dead. With a wet head. I look around the cage for any other dead creatures and pick up the hide. Sitting in there, calm as can be is my '05 MBK Jimmy The Foot. The little beast has been practicing his killing skills on my breeders!!!! He can't eat them - they're too big. But he tried. The old reptile cages had a different lid that slides. When I put the wire mesh lids on (with clips) I wasn't too worried about the gap in the back as the hamsters are terrible climbers and they are little fatties. But I didn't think of anything trying to get in!!!!

I am terribly relieved that he wasn't hurt - those hamsters are vicious!!! Apparently Jimmy The Foot can wedge himself out of his container. I can't believe how strong these snakes are. I added clips to Jimmys cage, so he'll leave my breeders alone and stay safe.

In a way I'm a little proud that he's so enthusiastic about eating. He was a little picky. Or was he defending himself against the little biters? Hmmmm... Either way, all is well. I'm out a few breeders, but my Jimmy is fine.

Hamster are vicious to begin with. But you can gentle them to be able to hold them. As for the snake. haha nice story.

Thanks guys - I think I just gaped at him for a bit. And I swear he said...what???

I agree that hammies can be tamed if they are held from a young age. I have a few though who watch me and when I put a hand in their cage they run for me. It's insane, they're like little kamikaze fighters!! They are adorable to watch though! I love how they try to slap you - it's hysterical :D

Thanks again, glad you enjoyed my Jimmys little adventure!
