First Time Mouse Owner/breeder

I'm Me, Deal With It
I all, my dad finally let me get mice! How long do I need to leave the female in with the male?

I leave my female mice in with the male all the time. They seem to do poorly (fighting, low fertility) if you disturb the group composition too much. I leave my mice in a nice quite area without any drafts & they seem to be fat & happy. They are producing very nicely for me :)

They have 2 plastic nesting boxes & shredded papertowel for the nest material. They also have papertowel rolls & plain (not printed) cardboard to shred. They seem to enjoy chewing those things to bits & are easy to replace with new ones after cleaning day.

You can leave him in there permanently. Then you'll have a constant flow of babys coming in nearly every month.

Exactly. Our female will pop in a week or so. The male has been a great help building the nest.

Yep, leave the male/female together all times if your are breeding for feeders. The female will give birth 21-24 days after getting pregnant and can get pregnant again 24-48 hours after giving birth.

Sometimes males will kill or eat the babies. But I have not had that problem,in my cases, the male would help out! :)

Vanilla I don't think your talking about mice gestation or anything those are long times. Mice gestation lasts 19-21 days, and and are in heat for 12 hours after birth.

Actually I am talking about mice.I have been breeding mice since 1998 and ALL of the mice I have ever bred gave birth 21-24 days after getting pregnant.Maybe they do go into heat 12 hours after birth,I always would leave the nests alone for the first few days, but all of the research I have done and in mouse forums and things, everyone says 24-48 hours...I guess it depends on the mouse. But thats my experiance and I can assure you,my mice get the best of everything and are healthy animals.

21 days is what I read somewhere~ three weeks give or take seems to be the fact. No need to fuss over it~ three weeks.

It will take the couple a few weeks to get "friendly" so don't go start messing with them if they don't pop out pups in three weeks. Most of my colonies go 7 to 10 weeks from weaners put into the colony to producing pups for me. Takes a while to grow~ figure out the mechanics~ and then actually start working. The more you mess with them the longer it will take. Don't mess with the colony once you put it together. If your going to want more females do it now rather than later~ the colony rarely will allow a "new" mouse.

If I have a pup killer it is usually another female. Sometimes even the momma. If it is the male he will usually only do it to a couple litters~ once he has been with the girls long enough to be sure all the pups produced are his, he rarely continues killing them. Females that kill will usually keep it up until the other females kill her, beat her into submission, or you discover her and cull her.

Good luck!

ok, one more question. i have a little "house"in the tank with the male and female, and the male has moved all of the bedding into it. my question is can i lift up the "house" to check on the females progress when the time comes? :shrugs:

Do not disturb the nest for 3 days after the female has her litter. They tend to eat the babies if you disturb them within that timeframe. :puke01:
